Santiam Wagon Road/House Rock

Description:

The historic Santiam Wagon was designed to lead settlers and their livestock eastward to the pasture lands of Central Oregon and to markets in eastern Oregon and Idaho. It became a major east-west byway through Cascades. This year the Trips Committee intends to have hikes all along this route from here to Fish Lake. In September there will be a FS celebration of the Wagon Road at Fish Lake. The Obsidians will be clearing a section of the SWR near Tombstone Prairie as part of this year of historic acknowledgement. And we intend to have a supported 1 day hike of the trail --18 miles.
We'll have plenty of time to look around the House Rock Cave and have lunch. Come prepared to enjoy this less traveled section of the trail. There are a couple minor creek crossings.

Trip Report

We had perfect weather on a beautiful trail. Once we got under way the frustration of having to follow a highway painting procession at 4 mph on our drive was instantly forgotten. The beauty of the trail and sound of the river can make you forget that the highway is not that far away. We took a quick look at the House Rock Cave and the waterfall before enjoying lunch along the river.
