Shore Acres Lights, Yurts

Description:

Pre-trip meeting December 5, @ Hideaway Bakery, @ approximately 11:30am. We have 3 yurts reserved at Sunset Bay. Our first stop after leaving Eugene is a brisk 4.5 mile hike and visit to the Interpretive Center at South Slough. Our next stop is the yurts to unload the cars. We will depart shortly thereafter for a leisurely 2-mile hike along scenic cliffs to Shore Acres. The gardens have a spectacular holiday light display and a decorated house. We will don our headlamps and walk back to the yurts, enjoying the murmur of the ocean. On Saturday we will hike the trails at Cape Arago and then return to Eugene around 5PM. The yurts are heated and have 2 bunk beds and 1 futon. The bathroom is in a separate building. Included in the cost: lodging, some snacks, morning coffee and tea, and camaraderie. Members have sign-up preference for a week after the trip is posted. Within 5 days of signing up, mail a check payable to the Obsidians in the amount of $27 (members) or $32 (non-members) to Obsidians, Attention Shore Acres, PO Box 51510, Eugene OR 97405. Cancellations: If you cancel before Nov 16, you will forfeit $10. If you cancel thereafter, you will forfeit the entire amount. Parking spaces are limited; carpooling is encouraged. Trip will be cancelled if icy roads.

Be prepared for rain, wind, and cold. Cooking is NOT permitted in the yurts, but there are picnic tables nearby.

Trip Report

We escaped the freezing temperatures in Eugene for warmer temperatures on the coast. At South Slough we explored a narrow dike at high tide and enjoyed the extensive boardwalk with its multiple zigzags. After hot drinks in our cozy yurts, we had a leisurely scenic hike along the headlands between Sunset Bay and Shore Acres. Entering the Shore Acres Holiday light display at dust from the forest was a magical experience. The warm breeze brought in light rain for our adventurous return hike through the dark forest. Our headlamps and safety vests worked well for this night hike. The next morning we explored another 4 miles of trails between Shore Acres and Cape Arago. Our trip ended with lunch at Sunset Bay.
