Description:

This is a short-fuse add on, since Kathy unfortunately had to cancel her trip. Shotgun Creek, just this side of Marcola, won't be as flat as Waterville Ponds, but it's nearby, not long, and has only been on the hiking schedule once in the past 2 1/2 years (by me, and I was the only one who did it). It is near a regenerating clearcut, but the place itself is lovely forest with many trails. I would plan to do the BSA Trail and the Shotgun Creek trail. The former does climb 600 feet, but the footing is good. We may or may not do the Shotgun Creek Trail, because while flat, it can be muddy. The Tiki Trail could be done, which is shorter, not quite as muddy, and doesn't climb. I will see who is along and try to decide something that will fit the group. Plan to be out there by 9:30 and back in town for lunch or coffee.

Trip Report

I put this on the schedule the day before, when Kathy R. had to cancel because of a bad auto accident. Fortunately, she was OK, but I thought her hike was a great idea for a short drive interesting hike where not many people go. Sooooo, I put Shotgun Creek on, which is close, but also was very wet, as a significant plume of moisture preceded the cold front that was coming down through the state. Only three of us went, which is probably par for such a hike. We took the Tiki trail to Drury Loop, and climbed 600' up to nearly the road, then stayed on the ridge before descending back to the Tiki Connect. We then retraced our first steps and went to the far upstream part of the creek and came back along the water. It was wet and muddy, exactly as I had advertised, but we stayed dry, our rain gear got a good test, and we stopped by Plank Town on the way back. I need to go up past there to take a look at Coburg Ridge.
