Trip Report

Beautiful sunsets, sunrises and a full moon, comfortable lodging with a great view of the lake and mountains to the north, delicious dinners, and friendly, flexible people made for a great 3 day adventure. Friday, Feb, 23 we all drove up to Gold Lake Snow park. As the area hadn't had significant new snow for a week, the snow conditions were ok for snowshoers, very icy for the skiiers. Nine snowshoers and 3 skiiers chose to venture to Midnight Lake, the 2 other skiers had fun on the roads just out of the snowpark. Friday night dinner was mediterranean appetizers, veggie and turkey lasagna, greens and pear salad, french bread and cookies. Very tasty. Several people chose to cap off the day with a walk under the full moon.

Saturday was a bluebird day. 9 people chose to snowshoe up stunning Trapper Creek in the Diamond Peak Willderness. Route finding without blue diamonds was a little tricky at times. Snowshoeing close to a creek as beautiful as Trapper Creek is just a special experience in the winter! The other participatants chose to check out Odell Lake Lodge and the Mak Laks trails just north of the Odell Lake lodge. Route finding there was also a challenge for the skiers as the roads/trails on the ground did not match those on older maps and current apps. The Saturday evening dinner was a taco bar with more cookies for dessert! It was followed by a rousing game of UNO.

Most people left for Eugene by noon as the snow conditions and options for other adventures were not that good. Three people chose to ski into Gold Lake. Knowing that the snow conditions in the Willamette Pass area are unpredictable, we had a great time in spite of a lack of fresh snow!
