Description:

This hike is listed in Sullivan's book under Carl Lake. Our destination is a cinder cone that is between Mt. Jefferson and Three Fingered Jack. Great views but also lots of sun exposure. If it's a warm day we'll probably stop at Carl Lake for a swim. Some of us will stop at Takoda's restaurant after the hike.

Trip Report

For our hike up South Cinder Peak, we began at the Cabot Lake trailhead. Unfortunately the road into this trailhead is in very rough shape, passable, but I recommend a high-clearance vehicle. The first two miles pass through the 2003 B&B burn area, so there is lots of sun exposure. At 5 miles in we passed Carl Lake and began a two-mile climb to the summit of South Cinder, where we enjoyed excellent views of the Cascades. On the way out, we stopped at Carl Lake, where some of us had a very cool and refreshing swim before hiking out to our trailhead.
