  • Start time: 5:30 AM

  • End date: 06/24/2025

  • End time: 7:00 PM

Description:

Join us for a climb of the standard summer route on South Sister. This non-technical route hikes a maintained trail then a well-traveled climbers trail to the summit. Depending on snow conditions we may be in snow from near the trailhead to the summit (less tiring). Though not steep, microspikes or crampons will help with footing. if snow has melted expect loose and rocky footing on the upper half of the climbers trail (more tiring). Total elevation gain is 4900 ft, like doing Mt. Pisgah 5 times over a long day. We will meet at the trailhead at 5:15 AM on climb day so plan on either spending the night at the Devils Lake trailhead or nearby, or departing Eugene by 2:30 AM as it's a 2.5-3 hour drive from Eugene. Suggested donation to drivers is $27.50.

Trip Report

7 eager climbers started early in the morning with the goal of summiting South Sister. After a short distance on the trail we traveled across snow almost all the way to the 'Red Mile' at 8800 ft. Once past the 'Red Mile' we crested the crater rim and traversed to the 10383 ft summit to complete a successful climb. 3 climbers opted to turn around at about the halfway point on the ascent, while the rest huffed and puffed to the top. Summiteers: Mandy Lund, Jay Torland, Maryanne Reiter, Steve Davis.
