Description:

South Sister is the second tallest peak in Oregon and a long challenging hike with plenty of scree and hopefully an incredible view from the summit. South Sister is also very heavily traveled in September. Therefore, I'm leading this climb to leave Eugene on SUNDAY (8/27) afternoon, hike in to Moraine Lake (about 2.5 miles) to camp. Then, early on MONDAY we'll make an attempt to summit. After packing up camp, we'll return to Eugene late Monday. Plans may change depending on weather forecast and climbing group.

Trip Report

Our small group hiked into beautiful Moraine Lake on a hot and smoky day to camp. This allowed us to start before sunrise with fresh legs to ascend South Sister. Few people were on the climber's trail on this Monday morning which is typically packed with hikers on any weekend day in September. Our group even had the summit area to ourselves! The smoke was minimal in the morning allowing for decent views from the summit; the air quality slowly worsened as we descended due to wildfires in the area (the smoke from one very close by was visible from the trail). Overall, it was a fun and efficient group to hike with.
