Trip Report

Shortly after noon on Saturday, our winsome fivesome departed the Devil's Lake trailhead up the climbers' trail. Breaking out of the gully in a full sweat, we were greeted by full views of South and Broken Top framed in blue above and murky Moraine Lake below. The grandeur of the scenery play illusions in our minds as we contemplated a dual peak weekend!?

Camping on the ridge Northwest by North of Moraine Lake, we started at 6 a.m., and summited between 9:30 and 10 a.m. in bright sunlight and cool winds. A casual descent with good glissades, and lunch put Broken Top out of our minds for the day. Opting for the scenic route out, we practiced a little spontaneous orienteering as the Moraine-Devils Lake Trail was snowed over and virtually untraveled/unmarked! While this added to the sense of adventure for at least one of the leaders, others were more reminded of a forced march. Joining the sociable group of Jim Russell, Kathy Perkins, and Matt Cooper, were leaders Rick and Sally Grosscup.
