Trip Report

With stars above and "skeeters" swarming around, we set out Sunday for the summit of the South Sister. A 4 a.m. start from our camp by Moraine Lake allowed us to reach the top after the excruciating scree slog up the cindered red ridge between 8 and 5 a.m. (We had divided into two groups of two.) We enjoyed a relaxing rest on top in company with a party of Mazamas. The weather was beautiful, the rocks were warm, and after our hard hike, seemed almost soft. After an hour on top we descended to the lake, packed up, and hiked out to the car at Devils Lake. Successfully summitting on South Sister were Rick Hargreaves, Archie Thompson, Tom Walsh and leader George Jobanek.
