Description:

We will be climbing South Sister via the Devils Lake TH. Since we have an overnight permit, we plan to hike in a ways (2-3 miles), camp and then summit and hike out the next day. South Sister is the third highest peak in Oregon and the summit affords amazing views of the Sisters wilderness and beyond.

  • Supplies and Equipment Required: Overnight camping: tent, warm sleeping bag, thermarest pad and foam pad (in case we are camping on snow), stove, etc. For climbing you will need an ice ax, crampons, trekking poles. A detailed gear list will be sent to participants.

Trip Report

We left the trailhead at 5:15 AM under clear skies and low wind. As we emerged from the trees onto the plateau, we smelled smoke, thinking it was a campfire from below at Moraine Lake we ignored it and started hiking again. However, Eamon Happy, the minor on the trip, decided to investigate and found smoke coming from the ground nearby. We all leapt into action and dug out the duff fire with our ice axes and then covered the area with snow. After that we had a pleasant climb to the summit where we enjoyed snacks and the extensive views. On the way down there were sections of snow that were perfect for glissading and so we got to slide down several steep snow slopes, much to the delight of those who had never glissaded. We were back to the car a little after 4 PM, happy with our climb.
