Trip Report

This climb began at the Devil’s Lake trailhead and followed the standard South Sister climbers’ trail past Moraine Lake. Our small group climbed quickly to the Red Ridge, where the group the spread out, each climbing at their own speed, leader at the rear of the group, huffing and puffing. Starting at 7:00 a.m., the "leader" was the last to reach the summit shortly after 1:00 p.m. It was a crowded but spectacular day on the summit. The thunderstorms of the previous evening had sparked a number of small fires, which were visible as small puffs of smoke rising from densely forested ridges in the distance. We were treated to hundreds of small butterflies fluttering around on the summit. The trip down was much faster than our climb up, and we crawled back to the cars by around 4:15, thirsty and sore.
