Trip Report

8 climbers met in Thurston early Friday morning for the drive to the Green Lakes trailhead. The Fall Creek trail showed off its wildflowers and waterfalls on the way to our camp in the Green Lakes basin. Saturday morning brought a high amount of smoke in the air from nearby forest fires. The smoke lingered most of the day partially obstructing the views along the climbers trail and from the summit. We only saw one other group on the ascent along the Green Lakes route. Once we reached the intersection with the more popular Devil's Lake route the team was a little surprised to see the hundreds of other climbers on the upper reaches of the mountain. One climber opted to wait for the group near the bottom of Lewis glacier as the rest of us joined the hordes for the final push up the scree to the summit. After lunch and pictures on the summit the team descended back to our camp and enjoyed a swim in South Green Lake before turning in for the night. Sunday's hike back to the cars proved warm and much less smoky than the previous day. Special thanks to Rick Harris for assistant leading and being our sweep on the trail. The team enjoyed well deserved hamburgers and ice cream in Oakridge on the way back to Springfield. All in all an pleasurable trip to a lovely area with a fun group of people.
