Description:

The plan is to continue our work from last month armoring culverts, re-establishing drainage ditches, re-surfacing the trail, grading/widening, compacting, and possibly the most fun form of invasive removal of all flamethrowers! Okay, we're not really going to be using flamethrowers but we will have a propane torch to use to burn/sterilize shining geranium and herb Robert.

Trip Report

Even under the threat of a cold front with the possibility of snow a group of hardy Obsidians met up at the Fox Hollow Trailhead to continue our work from last month. We would be working with Christer LaBrecque and Josh Schrader of the City's Parks and Open Space Division. Our group spread out along the lower section of the Tie Trail working to re-establish drainage and armor culverts. Work that saw Dan dig out a ditch and culvert entrance that 3 ft. deep ending up with one of the muddiest pairs of jeans we've ever seen. Pat's dedication saw her using her arms to clean out culverts. Along other sections of the trail an eroding 3 to 5 ft. tall retaining wall holding up a switchback was meticulously rebuilt and reinforced by Darko. While Mike and Nathaniel worked to widen and add retaining wall to a section of trail that badly need it.

Kimberly was especially keen to work to remove shining geranium and herb Robert from along the Tie Trail. She donned the backpack flamethrower (it's really just a propane torch) and patrolled the Tie Trail torching the invasive plants as she went.

Back at the Fox Hollow Trailhead we received a special treat from the owner of Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches on W 7th...delicious sandwiches and chips for all our volunteers as a thank you for the work we do keeping the trails passable. He's a weekly trail runner of the butte. We were very thankful for the sandwiches and enjoyed them in the sun that broke through the clouds as we ate.
