Description:

In response to Covid-19 a number of changes have been as we restart hikes on a limited, trial basis. All hikes are limited to a 10 person max, members only, and no fees are being collected. Social distancing will be maintained. Everyone is required to carry a face covering and know how to use it properly. Carry hand sanitizer. More information is available on the website.

Come between 8, the earliest starting time, and 8:30, the latest, although a 9:00 trip is occurring as well, so a little before 8:30 plan to start. People will arrive, let me know they are there, and start hiking. Please remember to stay 2m or 6' apart. If you meet someone going your way, excuse yourself and pass. If someone is coming the other way and doesn't get over, then step aside and face the woods. The flowers are great. You don't have to wear a mask if nobody is within 50 yards. I went up with a cloth mask and found it easier to keep it on. I had no trouble breathing. But you aren't required to keep it on.

I do plan going to the top. Again, stay apart there, and we will start down in a staggered fashion, since we will meet some coming up. There is actually more room on the steps than there is on many parts of the lower trail.

NOTE: If you haven't done hills since March, you will feel it. I was up in the rain on Tuesday, however, and it was good to be back. I went up there this weekend with loppers to clean up the face swatters. Lots of fringe cup to brush legs.

Trip Report

The first Spencer Butte hike after the lockdown: I had people spread out at the bottom and I followed about 15 minutes later after everybody had arrived. I was not able to be with most of the people except on the summit. Some changes need to be made.

I recommend:
1. Masks are mandatory to be worn on the trail any time there is passing or being passed. If nobody is well ahead of you, a mask may be removed. The reason is that droplets can hang in the air for some time after passage. I wore a mask the whole time up and down without difficulty.
2. If following someone, a mask must be worn. People cough and spit on the trail.
3. On top, masks may be removed only when eating and drinking, and one should be well away from others in doing so. If not eating or drinking, masks are important to be worn here, because talking spreads droplets and allows them to hang around for several minutes.
4. People can stop to chat but stay apart. I realize for some this is difficult. Again, talking is a higher spread activity than just distancing.
