Trip Report

Seven volunteers met Jason, Christer, and Lorna of Parks and Open Spaces at the main Spencers Butte parking lot at about 9 a.m. on a crisp, brisk morning.

The plan for the day was to go up above the recent trail reroute and improve a climbing switch back and install a retaining wall in a loose steep section that was threatening to undo some of our fencing work. With the help and expert advice of Jason and Christer our party was able to install two sections of retaining walls; one of rocks and peeler-cores and the other out of expertly sawed square beams. The section of fencing was greatly stabilized after the retaining wall was installed. This section of trail is now much safer and will allow power-wheelbarrows to get even closer to the top of Spencers Butte (much closer in fact than we've ever been able to before!)

During this time our group was also able to plant more than 20 Oceansprays and Cedars all of which where packed up by hand, in backpacks, or pushed in regular wheelbarrows.

Unfortunately, this was Jason Morrow's last trail maintenance outing with us as a City staff member. His sense of humor, work ethic, and chainsaw skills will be greatly missed by all volunteers. He's moving to Portland to seek a graduate degree at PSU.

We finished our work for the day and headed back to the parking lot at about 1 p.m.
