Description:

**This month's project has changed as of 1/27/2012**

The heavy amount of rain that has come down in the recent weeks has brought to the City's attention the dire need to clean culverts, drainage ditches, and remove muck from the trail bed along the Tie Trail and the Ridgeline Trail. They have staked and numbered trouble spots and plan on having us break into small groups each with a list of assignments. They have staked from the Tie Trail at the upper meadow all the way to the 52 and Willamette parking lot.

Given the long distance we can set up a shuttle, key pass, or just hike back to the main lot when we're done, this will depend on people's preferences.

Trip Report

On a very cold morning 14 volunteers met Josh Schrader of Eugene Parks and Open Space to clear culverts and drainage along the Tie Trail and Ridgeline Trail to Willamette & 52nd. Janet brought warm muffins that quickly disappeared while we waited for volunteers arrive. We gathered tools quickly and headed off down the trail figuring that we would instruct as we went that way we’d stay a bit warmer. We moved along the trail working from a list of things to do that the City had prepared. We dug out drainage ditches on the uphill sides of raised turnpike and cleaned out plugged culverts. In spots where water was running along the trail we dug in drains that would help to move the water off the trail. It had been about 5 years since the last time this kind of work was done and finding some of the culverts took an extra keen eye. Clearing out the drainage ditches was sometimes a daunting task that Todd, Sarah, & Sonja excelled at. Jim paired up with Clara who cleaned the ferns, twigs and other debris from the trail that Jim was cutting off with the gas-powered hedge clippers. In a few short hours our group accomplished a lot of work.
