Spencer Butte Litter Pick-Up Hike

Description:

The Ridgeline Trail Celebration is Saturday, May 5th. The Obsidians have adopted the Ridgeline Trails around Spencer Butte. There have been several trail maintenance outings to improve these trails. On our hike we will pick up litter in the parking lot and on top in the hopes it will stay "picked up" until the Celebraton . Bring gloves and a plastic sack. Some of us were on top last week and picked up a few plastic bottles. There are small pieces of glass on top so you might want to have a stronger bag and/or a large tablespoon or trowel to dig out the glass and those annoying pistachio shells that seem to last forever. Depending on number of people, we would spend around 15 -30 minutes to remove litter. If some want to extend the hike after the pick up, we can discuss our options. Parking permit not needed. Trip Report

Four of us attacked little pieces of candy wrappers, cigarette butts, broken glass, a few plastic bottles, orange peels (nature’s plastic) and pistachio shells that must take a millennia to compost. Our weapons of destruction were spoons, gloved hands, keen eyesight and a four tine rake. The ever present enemy, poison oak, blocked our advance in some cases but Rob Castleberry’s four tine rake ambushed the litter. We hope Jyoti’s son, Ashish Naik, visiting from Florida enjoyed the skirmish and the hike.
