Trip Report

For this month's outing we met at the main Spencer Butte parking lot to try to prevent shining geranium (an invasive species) from spreading into the forest. Our work was predominantly focused on removing it from the triangular patches of vegetation just past the trailhead kiosk. We mostly used rakes to remove the shining geranium, carrying it on cut open garbage bags (and a Les Schwab tire bag), and piling it near the parking lot for the City staff to pick up. While raking we happened to disturb some small and interesting creatures: one beaded lancetooth snail; and we came across 2 rain beetles. The uniqueness of rain beetles cannot be overstated and their lifecyle and peculiarities are well worth the effort of research. A teaser, after research the fact that they have hairy bellies happens to be one of their least interesting characteristics. We also removed some lemon balm, Himalayan blackberries, St. John's wort, and herb Robert.

Additionally, Clara once again cleaned the stairs immaculately. Special thanks go to David Cooper for hiking up the Butte to remove the bent over pieces of rebar that were anchored in the basalt of the butte right near the tree line.
