Description:

This is an Eastern Oregon moderate elevation hike through pristine sage and rimrock in the Spring Basin BLM Wilderness in John Day country. We will depart Friday afternoon from the BLM Trailhead about 5 miles from Clarno, OR. I will be coming up from Randy’s Painted Hills excursions just prior. It is a 4 hour drive to TH from Eugene.

Leaving the TH, hike 4 mi following faint tread eastward up side canyon and over crest into Spring Basin and camp. Saturday, explore southeast into Hay Bottom and remote Eagle Canyon. Sunday, return hike over crest to TH.

  • Supplies and Equipment Required: 10 essentials, 2 days of food and WATER. Don’t count on finding water. I’d recommend carrying 2 gallons if possible. To offset the water weight, this is a great trip to try going superlight particularly on your shelter as the canyon bottoms offer protected, pleasant Campsites. Expect-freezing temps to full-on Eastern Oregon sun. The tread is intermittent to non-existant, rocky, muddy, dusty and hopefully carpeted in wildflowers.
