Trip Report

On May 17 fifteen Obsidians and 10 friends left SEHS parking lot at 8 a.m. for Portland. It was a beautiful, sunny day. We arrived at 10:15 a.m. at the recently renovated Yamhill Street Mall. There were interesting shops with speciality stand-up eating places; there was a nice central area with wrought iron furniture to sit upon to eat.

Our bus, parked outside the Mall, drove us the two blocks to the dock at Front St., where we boarded the Sternwheeler "Columbia Gorge" and sailed at noon. A most interesting narration was broadcast throughout the 2 hour trip. First, up the Willamette near Sellwood Bridge, then down river. We passed the Port of Portland, former Kaiser Shipyard and the present day Dry Dock. The large tankers on dry dock and the Coast Guard ships were of great interest. At 2 o'clock we docked and boarded our Motor Coach for the return trip to Eugene. We stopped in Salem for a pleasant coffee break, and arrived at the SEHS parking lot at 5:15 p.m. It was a most pleasant trip for Ingrid Carmichael, Tom Carmichael, Clair Cooley, Loene Ellickson, Harriet Friday, Minnie Fosket, Gladys Grancorvitz, Irene Hake, Jane Hilt, Bernard and Rosalind Jacobson, Virginia Kapsa, Charlotte Lemon, Marilyn and Robert Morris, Olga Morrison, Frances Newsom, Alyce Rogers, Winona Sellard, Lois Schreiner, Dorothy and Clarence Scherer, Edrie Stuart, Frances Witzel and leader Jennelle Moorhead with Baxter Shaw as driver.
