Trip Report

After sampling the fabulous desserts brought by a large crowd of Obsidians and friends, everyone sat down to hear the long-awaited announcement of the summer outing site by Summer Outing Chairman Dick Moffitt. It was greeted with enthusiasm. Campers will establish themselves on Saturday, August 4 in the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness in the Strawberry Range of eastern Oregon south of Prairie City (that's just beyond John Day). Selma Vangsnes, our much loved cook, will be there again. (Selma has cooked at Obsidian summer outings for about 25 years.) Dick presented slides of the area made on a recent scouting trip the week before (some snow remained) and slides of last year's outing at Todd Lake.

Ewart Baldwin then took us along on a fascinating but somewhat hazardous bus tour beginning in London, traversing Europe, then across Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, India and ending in Nepal. The 46 member tour group experienced ups and downs in food & lodging and some brushes with danger while in Iran. (A 17 hour dash to the border was necessary.) But the many beautiful sights were worth the effort. Ewart's narration was so descriptive that we felt we were part of this Pan World tour group.
