LOAD BUS AT 7:30 am
The Oregon Coast Aquarium is the focus of our early spring trip to the Oregon coast. We'll visit the sea lions, seals. otters, assorted other creatures(large and small) and the colorful coast birds beginning their annual breeding plumage. We'll go via Corvallis with a coffee stop at Avery Park. We'll be able to observe some animals during their feeding time. Knowledgeable volunteers are at the otter, seal lion/seals and aviary. They have stories to tell about their "creatures" and can answer questions. The large gift shop is a shopper’s delight. Lunch will be on your own at the Aquarium restaurant. Before leaving Newport we'll drive around the area near the aquarium to see the developing OSU marine science campus and NOAA (National Oceanic Atmospheric Association). We hope to visit the NOAA research vessel as well. Leaving the area we'll return down the coast looking for returning whales swimming north. Ice cream in Florence if we're in the mood.

Trip Report

The chilly, rainy weather did not dampen the enthusiasm of Obsidian bus riders for our trip to Newport. As we drove north on Hwy. 99 we observed a lot of flooding in the fields alongside the road. After several days of rain, both the Willamette and Long Tom rivers were overflowing their banks. However, we were lucky to avoid closed roads since there were warnings. After our coffee and special munchies break at Avery Park in Corvallis we proceeded on to Newport to visit the Aquarium. We were entertained by the Giant Japanese Crab; a special performance by a rescued brown pelican; the awesome jelly fish; the sea birds getting their mating plumage; the Passages of the Deep and the large gift shop. The Aquarium is situated among natural gardens and the Yaquina River and is an inviting location for viewing native plants and sea animals. Then, it was on to an amazing tour of the NOAA Research vessel Bell M. Shimada, a state-of-the-art fisheries survey vessel. This was followed by a visit to the NOAA museum to learn more about the work of the agency. The ship was moored for repairs so our timing was fortunate to have this special tour. As always, the drive from Newport to Florence gave us many opportunities to view the magnificent Pacific Ocean. A short stop in Florence Old Town for ice cream, delicious chocolates or hot coffee was an enjoyable break. In spite of the dampness it was a fun day and we returned to Shopko by 6:00 as planned.
