Description:

This hike rises gently through the forest before arriving at the base of a cinder hill, with a switchback or two to a dazzling view of Waldo Lake and the Cascade peaks. We'll admire the views here, then proceed along the saddle to a lunch spot atop the south Twin summit, with a 360-degree view of the surrounding peaks and lakes. After lunch, there's a short scramble down the sandy/cinder hill (poles might be helpful) to a trail that loops around to join the trail we came in on, and then back to the trailhead.

Update concerning the Cedar Creek Fire: if the Twins trail is still open, I'll probably plan on doing the hike as scheduled. It sounds like most days the smoke has been going off toward the east, and views have actually been pretty good. If it seems too smoky on the day of the hike, I'll suggest an alternate hike of similar length/elevation gain.

Note: I'll be out of town and without cell coverage Aug. 22-26. I'll try to respond to phone messages/emails after that.

Trip Report

Even though the Cedar Creek fire was actively burning a mile or two from our trailhead, our group of 11 set out under clear blue skies to hike up to the Twins. Though it was too early for huckleberries, we were happy to find that it was also too late for mosquitoes. We enjoyed an easy hike up to the first dazzling view of Waldo Lake (with a visible layer of smoke over the western edge), and then continued up a cinder slope to the South Twin. Over lunch we enjoyed views of the Cascade peaks from Mount Jefferson to Diamond, as well as...well, some lakes that might have been Cultus, and/or Crane Prairie, and/or Wickiup, and/or Davis. The wind picked up as we ate lunch, so as we headed down the cinder slope back down to the trail, we encountered a little smoke in the air. After a minor delay for a boot repair (duct tape is obviously the 11th essential!), we returned to the trailhead to complete a pleasant late summer hike.
