Description:

This is a 3-mile walk through the Eugene Masonic Cemetery and the University of Oregon celebrating the 200th birthday of Thomas Condon, a fossil-hunting minister who was Oregon's first state geologist, the University of Oregon’s first science professor, and the first to recognize the paleontological importance of the John Day region. He was a forward-thinking man who ensured that future generations could fully appreciate the richness of the state’s natural history. This hike begins and ends at 25th & University St - Eugene Masonic Cemetery. Because of Covid we will not be visiting the inside of the Museum of Natural & Cultural History or stepping inside buildings on the UO campus. We will make a brief stop at the Erb Memorial Union if a bathroom stop is requested, but that is dependent upon public access at that time. We should be finished by 6pm. Bring a flashlight and dress for the weather. The hike goes rain or shine. Fossils fans - bring your stories!
