Trip Report

Twenty-nine members and three nonmembers left South Eugene High Parking Lot at 8:05 a.m. headed for Sisters, Oregon and a promise of a slow, leisurely pace traveling for 2 days. After the coffee break in Sisters we drove 17 miles south to Three Creeks Meadow at 6300feet elevation, expecting mosquitoes, but instead, enjoyed a cool north breeze along with sunshine. More than half the people hiked to the Three Creeks Lake while the others ate their lunch and wandered about. Later we discovered the road to the lake was resurfaced so the bus drove to the lake so all could see and look about. We left there at 3:20 p.m. for the heated pool and spa at beautiful Entrada Lodge 2miles west of Bend on the Century Drive. Then the bus drove us into Bend where we scattered for dinner.

A delicious breakfast was enjoyed by everyone at the Lodge. Since we expected to ride the chair-lift to the top of Mt. Bachelor at 10 a.m. we left the Lodge at 9:30 a.m. We soon ran into rain and snow, so instead, we inspected the new Day Lode where the lift takes off, and found the latest in a sophisticated ski lodge - far from the old days' style. The rain and snow abated at times and enough for the walk into Todd Lake, about 500feet. We looked and admired Sparks and Devils Lakes and drove on to Elk Lake for "time out" again. Lunch in sunshine and showers at Lava Lake. On to Crane Prairie and saw a doe and three fawns cross the road. We stopped at two entrances to the lake and viewed Osprey nests, 3 cormorants and plenty of golden mantle squirrels. A stop at Davis Lake and a walk around but not much activity there. No rain but a brisk breeze. Home via Highway58 with a 15minute delay for road construction, arriving in Eugene by 5:15 p.m.

Everyone enjoyed the beauty of the mountains, lakes and meadows at the leisurely pace in spite of the unexpected weather in mid-July. Bus riders were Ewart (leader) and Margaret Baldwin, Elene Barker, Carlene Beck, Mary Bundy, Ingrid Carmichael, Bernice Claypool, Clair Cooley, Euphema Culp, Bette Hack, Vera Heidenreich, Evelyn Hile, Beatrice Hill, Jane Hilt, Virginia Hodson, Miki Hutchison, Beatrice Lefevre, Charlotte Lemon, Kay Lundeen, Mary Mallery, Frances Newsom, Daisie Niccolls, Janice Pattison, Hazel Peck, Lois Schreiner, Ethel and Robin Steussy, Val Thoenig, Frances VanVoorhis, Mildred Weatherby, Virginia West and Ada Woberg, and bus driver Norman Day.
