Trip Report

This climb was "scheduled" for Sept 25-26, but conflicts moved it back one weekend so the leader would not have to "take call" from "the crawl". All climbers rode in Dr. BreMiller's VW van comfortably and maintained our precise time schedule to meet "any others" at the Santiam Pacific Crest Trailhead at 4:00 p.m. Hiked to Square Lake arriving 5:30 p.m. in a mild shower; tents up, fires started for warmth and spirits were high for all including the novices who knew no better! Rain described as heavy continued all night but stopped at 6:00 a.m. Our favorite breakfasts got us on the trail at 7:30, passed Booth Lake, Martin Lake, Summit Lake and up to the saddle in good time. The Mazamas had "the crawl" all fixed up for us so we crossed while they were on the summit. The assistant leader, John L. Moffitt, lead the chimney and belayed the rest of us to the summit and supervised the rappels which went without "a hitch".

Mt. Jefferson was "Big", clouds on Washington and other Obsidian climbs on Mt. Washington, South Sister, Maxwell Butte, and from Jack Lake kept us surrounded. Quick descent to Jack Lake to Booth Lake trail back to Square Lake in late afternoon, and back to Hiway 126/20 in the dark, in the rain on "old Square Trail" to meet John Moffitt with van all warmed up for our trip home in comfort about 10:00 p.m. Carol Houde did not make the summit, but the following did: Clifford BreMiller, Mary Ann Houde, Kathy Ryan, John, Rea and Robert Moffitt, leader.
