Trip Report

Due to the unselfishness of Frank Moore, I was allowed to lead the difficult pitches on this beautiful mountain. We started our climb at 5:40 a.m., 10 minutes later than our planned departure due to the tardiness of Joe Turner. Joe awoke at 4:10 a.m., left Eugene sometime thereafter and arrived at the Santiam Pass at 5:35 a.m. (approximately 90 miles). Joe will be on the front row in next year's Indy 500. (Look out Danny Sullivan!)

The day started cloudy but with lots of sunshine in the afternoon. We all managed to slog through the snow and reach the saddle by 11 a.m. The route was free of snow and all 10 climbers were up and down to the saddle again by 4 p.m. The slog through the soft snow was long and slow with all the climbers at their cars by 6:30 p.m. All climbers - Keith Blunck, Bruce Farthing, Barbara Mickel , Jerry Mohler, Frank Moore, Kathy Perkins, Mark Perrin, Archie Thompson, Joe Turner, and leader Rick Hargreaves - reached the summit.
