Trip Report

Camped overnight at the PCNST trailhead. It was full of horse trailers for the first day of hunting season. We set off about 7:30 on a clear, sunny day. After about two hours we cut off the dusty trail and went cross-country until we caught the South Ridge. We traversed up and down along the ridge and then scrambled upwards to the crawl. Here we found a rope already in place from a Corvallis group up ahead. All six of us climbed to the rather precarious summit and enjoyed a spectacular view of the surrounding area. We rappelled down the chimney, prussiked down the crawl, and slid down the scree to more solid ground. After a brief rest and airing out we headed back to the cars like horses going back to the barn! It was a congenial, mild-mannered group consisting of new summiteers Dan Bates, Amy Crook, Mike Lipp, old hands and assistant leaders John Jacobsen and Tom Donnelly, and the anxious kahuna Rick Ahrens.
