Trip Report

Loaded down with bags and packs filled with toiletries, nineteen of us walked from Amazon Community Center to First Family Center to deliver our donations. Family Support Specialist Hailey Finnigan thanked us for giving so many donations and that the families will appreciate all the help. With a lighter step, we walked on the bike path to the Nightingale Hosted Shelter community at 3500 Hilyard Street. Joella donates a home cooked once a week for the twenty residents and had made arrangements for a tour with the resident camp manager, Nathan Showers. Funded by primarily by grants and donation, we were so impressed with the scope of assistance. Awesome! Joella returned with some of group while the rest of us continued on to Tugman Park, South Hilyard Terrace on Betty Niven Lane with its low income rentals for working families, and the First Family Annex at West Amazon and Fox Hollow. Our 2 ½ hour walk made us more aware of housing options and how much St. Vincent de Paul has provided affordable housing and homeless services for our community. The most heard phrase: “I had no idea that this was here. “
