Description:

Meet at the corner of East 21st Avenue and Potter St. to do the 2-hour So. Univ. neighborhood fall foliage tree walk with Whitey Lueck. Please be there before 10 am! The “hill soil” here supports some of the most massive trees in Eugene—including two contenders (a pin oak and an Atlas cedar) for “largest individual of the species” in the state. Donation accepted. Next we will walk to and lunch at the Unthank Hall dining hall, 1451 Agate. Credit cards & cash accepted. The PNW Public Market is on the ground floor of the hall offering delicious, local, & chef-driven food venues! More at https://housing.uoregon.edu/pnw
After lunch, we will walk to the Museum of Natural and Cultural Museum, 1680 E. 15th to view the new exhibit on the kelp forest ecosystem. This is opening day so guided tours and refreshments are planned. $4-$6 per person admission price. More at https://natural-history.uoregon.edu/events

Trip Report

Whitey Lueck's tree walk in the south UO neighborhood was very interesting on this cold autumn morning. A large crowd greeted him and most of us stayed on his tour until after noon. He highligted significant trees on the blocks betweem 19th & 23rd and Harris & Onyx. Birch have been replaced recently by young oaks and maple trees. Trees, like cedars, sweetgum and sequoias - and one remarkable Oregon-mrytle - planted in the last 90 years are now tall, all planted on this land where no trees existed about 100 years ago! We walked to campus and lunched in Unthank Hall at a long live-edge table in this campus dorm and eatery. Most of us then visited the Museum of Natural and Cultural History to view the new kelp exhibit.
