Trip Report

A dozen happy wanderers visited the U of O campus between summer session and Fall Term, stopping occasionally for talk of sustainability efforts including not only environmental, but also cultural, social and economic justice sustainability. Evelyn shared that today's (Sept. 20, 2021) issue of the New Yorker magazine has an article on Derrick Bell, "The Man behind Critical Race Theory", had been dean of the UO Jon Jaqua Law School. Crisp morning, on the eve of autumn equinox. One focus of the walk was trying to see differences between various evergreen conifers: Giant Sequoias vs. Coast Redwoods, and Incense cedars vs. Western red cedars. A visit to the landscapes of Many Nations Longhouse and eating Jorry donated chocolate vegan cookies (with a nod to custom created by Janet Jacobsen) in a serene gathering clearing among native plantings was a lovely pause. Last Monday's UO Sustainability Walk was also remembered by Lisa sharing the fact that the Native American architect, Johnpaul Jones, of the Many Nations Longhouse was also the lead design consultant for the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.
