Trip Report

A most congenial group, several who are new to Eugene and campus, enjoyed a deliciously cool morning after searing heat of previous days as we wandered about together. Favorite trees and flowers were shared, and then we found many of them on our way. After marvelling at the Yellow Buckeye planted after the Ohio State-UO Rose Bowl in 1958, a fledgling downy woodpecker looking perhaps stunned on the ground blocked our way across the Lillis plaza. As we wondered whether it was going to be OK, it took off in flight into a tall tree. A mystery tree was found later in the UO Tree database to be a Caucasian Wingnut. I am just a Caucasian Dingbat, but many people seemed to enjoy learning all I shared about campus plantings. Was it Judy who dramatically recited what a ranger had emphasized contrasting the redwood and sequoia--note to self--ask her to repeat it. Donna shared the story of Ruff Magnolia Park in Springfield, when someone (Frank I think) shared that they loved magnolias... But we were all totally awed at the richness of campus landscaping. Credit was given to Whitey Lueck and to Jane Brubaker (UO Campus Landscape Designer) for sharing so much of their knowledge of campus trees. One treat was seeing a UO Facilities Uniformed guy's torso poking out of a manhole; he told us it accessed the tunnels running all around campus, going back across Franklin Blvd., conduit for all of the utilities. (Aha, do you see any overhead wires on campus!?!?)
