Trip Report

After a smoke watch to see if the air turned unhealthy as it might with the huge Cedar Creek fire still burning in the east, several of us gathered to visit and admire the marvelous trees of campus. On a misty and cool morning, we strolled among coeds and trees, stopping occasionally to feel the presence of and discuss such trees as the young female Gingko in the Old Quad and its male suitor around the corner, the Bigleaf maple planted by the first janitor, the Dawn redwoods, purple European beech, the Condon oak, the Moon tree, the Coast redwood transplanted from a terrarium in the nineteen twenties, and the Caucasian wingnut. Photo taken in front of the Giant sequoia which lost its crown in the Columbus Day storm of 1962, but continues to thrive.
