  • End date: 11/10/2017

  • End time: 11:59 PM

Description:

Departs from the Owen Rose Garden parking lot (where N. Jefferson ends at the south bank of the Willamette River).

This hike is dedicated to all veterans on their national day of recognition. All veterans are encouraged to participate as well as anyone else who would like to join us. We will hike the south bank path going East and pause at the Veterans War Memorial to read and remember the names of those Lane County veterans who gave their lives in past and current wars. We'll continue on the path and cross over the river at the Autzen footbridge. There, we'll head back West through Alton Baker Park where we will find a place to stop and have a snack. We'll cross the DeFazio footbridge and return to our starting point. The pace will be leisurely to encourage talking and getting to know those we may not know.

Trip Report

Thirteen Obsidian members showed up on a overcast and drizzly morning for a 5 mile hike along the south and north bank river trails. We stopped at the Lane County War Memorial to honor our local fallen neighbors who gave their lives in WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and the more recent Gulf Wars. Among our 13 participants, we had 8 military veterans on the hike. Holger Krentz and Jennifer Baer are Air Force Veterans; Tom Rundle and Tommy Young are Marine Veterans; Sam Tracer and David Lodeesen are Army Veterans; Michael Smith is a Navy Veteran; Peter Graham is a Coast Guard Veteran. A special recognition was given to Tommy Young, who suffered devastating wounds while in Vietnam in 1967. Mr. Young was medivaced out of the field after he and another Marine suffered very serious wounds from an exploding landmine while on a search and destroy patrol south of Danang. Mr. Young spent many months in a hospital in Japan before he could be transported back to the United States. He has spent a lifetime since, recovering from those wounds. We salute Tommy Young and all our veterans for the sacrifice they made for our country.
