Veterans Day Hike

  • Start date: 11/11/2023

  • Start time: 12:00 AM

  • End date: 11/11/2023

  • End time: 11:59 PM

Description:

We will continue the tradition of a Veterans Day hike started by the late Dave “The Griz” Lodeesen (1952-2021), who served in a helicopter squadron in Vietnam in 1971 and frequently wore a hat saying “Practice Peace.” He founded the hike in 2016 and led it for four years.
This walk will go by two memorials by Skinner Butte and along the Willamette up to Valley River and either across and back on the other side or straight back.

We welcome Veterans, and as our guests, Veterans will not be charged the guest fee. Please sign up using the Guest Registration feature in the Online Trip Signup link. Nobody should feel at all out of place.

Wear what you wish, and if you have a Griz story, that would be welcome. We will be done by 11:30, maybe earlier.

We will have this regardless of the weather, although the Griz once told me in writing that Wind+Rain=Misery.

Dorothy van Winkle is a co-leader for this.

Trip Report

A large group came to the Campbell Center parking lot for the Veterans' Day walk. We visited one memorials in the park and walked downstream to the bridge. There, we split into two groups, one's going further downstream to Owosso and back around, adding about 3.5 miles to the loop. The rest of us walked back to the Campbelll Center area, stopping by to visit the Vietnam Memorial. The weather cooperated, being windy and brisk but not an issue. It was really great to see many people out there!!
