Berry Creek-Nelson Ridge-Princess Tasha Loop

  • Start date: 07/28/2024

  • Start time: 8:30 AM

Description:

Due to wildfire road closures and air quality the previously listed Vivian Lake hike is cancelled and this beautiful 7.1 mile loop just north of Florence is the runner up. Most folks know it as Cape Mountain, but All Trails gives it a different, lengthy name, stringing together the trails that make up the loop. It features views, old-growth forest and meadows. Possibly some muddy sections and easy creek crossing. I haven't hiked it in many years but recent All Trails comments continue to give it high marks. Could have some overgrown sections, suggest long pants. If folks are interested in stopping in Florence for ice cream or coffee on the way back, we will do that. Driver carpool fee suggested donation: $15.00.

Trip Report

Obsidians know how to handle a challenge! The trip began with the early morning revelation that highway 126 was closed due to an accident beyond the town of Mapleton. After consulting paper maps (always good to have on hand) the drivers and entire group agreed to head to Mapelton and then take a forest service road through the beautiful area of Minerva, ending up at the coast right at Fred Meyer in Florence. We connected with another participant and made it to the trailhead. <br />

What a gorgeous loop! We saw a lot of old growth, had lunch by a beautiful stream, were treated to several views of the coast and dunes, and due to All Trails under estimating the distance, we hiked 8.5 miles instead of 7.1. Big shout out to Dave C., for driving and co-navigating the unknown road, and all the participants for being wonderful about delays and extra mileage!
