Description:

***IMPORTANT***The hike will be cancelled should there be excessive smoke.

For those in appropriate condition, this is a chance to do a straightforward 20 mile hike. The trail is not flat; there are stretches of short but significant climbs. The plan is to get on the trail well before 8:30 and finish by 3:30. Early miles when it is cool and one is fresh pay dividends in the afternoon, when one is tired. The top priority is to do the hike. It’s long, and we need to keep moving, with short breaks to eat, hydrate, then move again before stiffening up. I don’t plan doing 10 (miles) before 10 (am), but I would like to have lunch at South Shelter, 13.5 miles in, using the afternoon to finish the remaining miles. For those having difficulty, Shadow Bay is a bail out option at about 15 miles. Be able to walk comfortably at a walking pace for a long distance; I recommend the full river walk in Eugene, which is 15 miles.

  • Supplies and Equipment Required: Good boots, a pair of spare shoes and socks if you want to change in mid-hike, rain gear and waterproofed (since often the waterproofing disappears in summer). Want 2 liters of water minimum, maybe Gatorade if you tend not to drink. Glucose to suck on is a good thought, and quick energy foods (that would be carbohydrates). Walking poles are a good idea, light pair of gloves (heavier if cold), layers but not a lot of extraneous gear. Regarding layers: start cold for two reasons: 1, you will warm up soon enough and 2 it saves about 10-15 minutes in the early part of the hike, 10-15 minutes you are going to want to have much later in the trip.

Trip Report

We had six people on a cold (32 degrees at North Waldo Campground) but sunny morning. We all hiked at the same pace, taking brief breaks at all trailheads (there were eight) and longer breaks (about 5-7 minutes) every hour. We worked our way across North Waldo, the long stretch along the west shore, had lunch at South Waldo Shelter, and did the long, in the woods with no views of the lake stretch back up to the starting point. We were on the trail before eight, and we finished about three fifteen. Twenty miles, no more, no less (I know, it should be fewer, but this is idiomatic), everybody survived It is remarkable to look at the whole lake at the end of the hike and tell yourself you have been around every single bit of it!
