Trip Report

A happy-go-lucky group of 38 people left SEHS parking lot on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 8:00 a.m. bound for Florence and a trip on the sternwheeler "Westward Ho!". We arrived at the dock about 9:30 and boarded the boat at 10:00 on an ideal Fall day with the fog just lifting and sunshine on the Siuslaw River. Goodies were provided for us in the galley and everyone went through at least twice for coffee, sweet rolls and doughnuts. Proud Mary narrated the trip, pointing out old homesteads, islands, estuary, clam flats and other historic points along the river. Some stayed inside while others went on the lower or top decks. We traveled almost to Mapleton before turning back. There were lots of birds, especially osprey, clinging to the dead trees. After returning we had a little time and everyone scattered in Old Town Florence until the motor coach picked us up and we left for the overlook between Florence and Reedsport. Alas, the fog had not lifted in this area and we enjoyed looking out on the sand dunes but could not see the ocean. Some took a short hike on the deep sand. All enjoyed the time to visit on the deck of the overlook, but soon hunger overcame us so we left for Lighthouse Park close to Winchester Bay for lunch. There was fog there, too, so we didn't linger but went back to Winchester Bay where we had an ice cream and exploring stop. We then went to Reedsport and with the able help of Ewart Baldwin found the beautiful new Umpqua Discovery Center where we enjoyed the museum displays and watched a short movie. It was too late for a tour of the Antarctic research vessel "Hero" which is berthed there, but this will be saved for a later date.

Arriving home about 5:30 were Murray & Wilda Agate, Ewart & Margaret Baldwin, Rita Baxter, Barbara Brundige, Ingrid Carmichael, Berme Claypool, Marge Eaton, Ardis Ebbighausen, Bea LeFevre, Elma Doris Havemann, Barbara & Kess Hottle, Tilde Jensen, Barbara Jones, Dodie Leppman, Lillian Johnson, Norman Lumion, Ruth Moule, Lois Nelson, Frances Newsom, Dean Patterson, Janice Pattison, Alta Proctor, Liz Reanier, Bonnie Rickard, Kathy & Parker Riddle, Peg Rhodes, Lois Schreiner, John Swan, Louise Thurber, Carobi & Christof Wegelin, and trip leaders Bette Hack and Bill Eaton.
