Trip Report

We left V.R.C. at 8:00 a.m. under cloudy skies with some sun during the day and overcast at the coast but no rain or wind. We traveled Hwy. 99 through Corvallis and stopped at Helmick State Park for our morning break and lots of Easter goodies. We went through Rickreal and took Hwys. 22 and 18 through Lincoln City. Ethel Allen gave a short talk on Lincoln City (it is seven miles long, and incorporated four other towns in 1964). We arrived at the Inn at Spanish Head at 11:00. This fabulous inn is built on a cliff and the entrance is on the 9th floor of the building and we took the elevator down to the 4th floor where they had arranged for our group and the volunteer from "Whale Watching is Spoken Here" was on hand to assist us. There are 27 points along the Oregon Coast during the week of March 23-30 which are staffed with volunteers and have signs indicating "Whale Watching is Spoken Here". There was not an over-abundance of whales and they were far out. Most everyone was looking through binoculars bur some people saw the spray and tails as they came up for air … some people didn’t. A delicious buffet lunch was served at 12:00. Barbara Beard had come early that morning and made cream puffs for dessert. She is Ethel Allen’s daughter, lives in Lincoln City and works for the inn. We left at 1:30 p.m. and arrived at Depoe Bay at 2:00, where we stopped along the sea wall. People scattered to walk along the wall and visit the shops. We did not see any whales there and we left Depoe Bay and stopped at Yaquina Head, where we parked close to the overlook. There were lots of sea lions on the rocks below. Some people walked out to the lighthouse. We left for home from Newport, stopping at Avery Park for our final rest stop, and arrived home at 6:15.
