Trip Report

Twenty-one Obsidians departed at 7:45 a.m. on a cloudy day with our coffee-cookie break at the Santiam River; then north on I-5 exiting at Brooks, going through the French Prairie-St. Paul area to the Heirloom Old Garden Rose nursery. We enjoyed an interesting hour there among several hundred varieties of roses. To Champoeg State Park for a 10-minute film of the history of this important place. Then we lunched near the spot where the settlers voted to petition the U.S. for provisional territorial status on May 2, 1843. On to Lake Oswego for the two-hour trolley ride to downtown Portland and return. We traveled on the restored rail tracks along the Willamette River, through a long tunnel, over two high trestles and into southwest Portland, now over-built with condos and high rises. Back to the bus and we used the Stafford Road shortcut to the freeway. The paint spill and traffic tie-up near Albany forced us to go on some unknown-to-us back roads to Albany, missing most of the congestion. Driver Larry Edwards did his usual great job getting us back to Eugene before 6:30.
