Trip Report

Where were all the women??? The '75 trip wasn't that bad was it?? The trip, this year, was scheduled to start August 14th. We shuttled the cars that day, hiked four miles from North Crater Lake boundary to Summit Rock road, got soaked, camped near leader's vehicle, got soaked, reversed car shuttle Sunday and drove home to wait for more favorable weather.

By Wednesday, August 18th, the weather was good so we cut the shuttle to two vehicles and seven hikers and started from Windigo Pass on Thursday. That was a 5½ mile day plus a climb of Cowhorn Mtn. We camped on a ridge, above Windy Lakes, at about 6800 ft. elevation. The campsite was great, the view was spectacular, the mosquitos annoying, the water supply a long way down the cliff at South Windy Lake. The Friday hike was all down-hill, about 5½ miles, to Summit Lake. We arrived at noon, found a beautiful campsite on the northeast shore of the lake, very few mosquitos, lots of sunshine, and very invigorating (Brrrr) water for swimming. Donn Chase met us there, with his son-in-law, Rick Sanders, that evening, to join us for the trip to Willamette Pass.

The Saturday trip was 8½ uphill miles along the new PCNST (Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail) through the Diamond Peak wilderness. This new trail gets the hiker up to about 6800 ft. elevation along the east side of Diamond Peak and it provides good viewpoints for the area from Mt. Thielsen to the Three Sisters. Star gazing was excellent in the evening. Our campsite was scenic, the streamwater was excellent, and handy, but the X?!%+Z mosquitos drove us under headnets and into the tents. The Sunday trip was all downhill to Willamette Pass through mosquito lake country.

Weather permitting, we plan to reschedule the Diamond Lake to Windigo Pass section on September 24,25,26. Others will be welcome to join us.
