Trip Report

As a tribute to Mary Mallery, this day was designed to revisit some of her favorite places in Yamhill County. We traveled through Salem, and stopped at the Fort Yamhill Blockhouse located in the Dayton city square. On to historic Lafayette to the Yamhill County Museum, which includes the Poling Memorial Church, a utility building containing farm implements and a fantastic two-story log cabin. Our gracious hostess was Maxine Williams. Elma Shuck delighted with stories of Mary’s early life on the farm with her family and friends, and George Williams told of his work in preserving heritage trees in the area. A very enjoyable time, plus coffee and cookies. In the afternoon, geologist Ewart Baldwin led most of the group up to the Bellevue Erratic Rock. We learned how the Ice Age breakup deposited this monstrous argillite rock from Montana to the hillock just off Hwy. 18. We completed a diverse day at the Lawrence Gallery where we saw outstanding art work; the lofty prices were a major shock! We lunched at the Flying "M" Ranch west of Carlton, traveling through scenic farmland. Their lodge building is very nice with the ambiance of many dead animals adorning every wall. Our route back to Eugene was through Amity, Rickreall and Corvallis, via Hwy. 99-W, arriving here by 6:00 p.m.

Our veteran driver from Oregon Coachways was Lee Cayser, who did his usual excellent job at the wheel. Riders were: Ethel Allan, Ewart & Margaret Baldwin, Lloyd & Betty Bissell, Marian Borchardt, Glendora Burbank, Dick & Madelaine Burns, Ingrid Carmichael, William Eaton, Bette Hack, Joan Hamley, Betty Haralson, Dora Harris, Barbara Hasek, Herman Hendershott, Jeanette Kimball, Evelyn Knott, Rosella Jones, Dodie Leppmann, John & Lenore McManigal, Cleora Mersdorf, Grace Miller, Walt & Barbara Miller, Jane Mitchell, Liz Reanier, Elva Shorack, Harvey & Betty Speck, Louise Thurber and Ray Jensen, leader.
