Description:

This classic Obsidian hike will take us up a short section of the PCT to South Mathieu Lake and some excellent views of the Cascade Volcanic Arc. From the top of Yapoah Crater there is an amazing view of recent lava flows and glacial features near North Sister and Collier Cone. Climbing the volcanic cone is optional. On the return loop we will visit North Mathieu Lake, an unusual lake, partly formed by a lava dam. There will likely be some long patches of snow on the PCT. Gaiters, trekking poles and water resistant footware are highly recommended. BE PREPARED FOR MOSQUITOES ON THE FIRST 1.5 MILES FROM THE TRAIL HEAD.

Trip Report

From Lava Camp, we hiked the PCT to South Matthieu Lake, passing through a about a mile of burned timber from the 2017 fire. About two-thirds of of the trail beyond South Matthieu was covered with snow, including most of the north face of Yapoah Crater. This hardy, experienced crew handled the steep snow ramps with ease and elegance. 10 of us climbed the crater and circumambulated the rim in cold wind gusts. Views of volcanic arc from Mt Adams to Diamond Peak were spectacular. We descended for a long lunchtime celebration. On the return loop we stopped briefly at North Matthieu Lake, but didn't stay long to avoid the mosquitoes. We rolled back into Lava Camp after about 6 hours, 10.5 miles and 1,400 ft. elevation gain.
