Potlucks & Presentations and other Lodge Events

All are welcome.

Unless otherwise mentioned, you do not need to be an Obsidians member to attend Entertainment Events, and there is no registration or signup required. Be sure to check the Calendar before you arrive in case of a change in date or time.

Potlucks & Presentations

We gather together at the Obsidians Lodge for potluck suppers, followed by a program, often a slideshow presentation, featuring matters of interest such as travel, outdoor activities or nature.

Social time begins at 6:05 PM; Potluck at 6:30 PM; Presentation at 7:30 PM and lasts approximately an hour. If you want to attend only the presentation, please arrive at the Obsidians Lodge before 7:30 PM.

Bring your favorite potluck dish to share – a main dish, salad, casserole, bread, or dessert – and your own plate, bowl, eating utensils, and hot beverage cup that you will take home to wash. Decaf coffee, tea and hot chocolate will be provided. Please do not bring serving utensils for your potluck dish.

Our buffet table has sections for Breads, Salads, Main Entrees, Vegetarian Entrees, and Desserts. In consideration of vegans and those with food allergies, we provide labels for you to indicate dishes that are vegan, gluten-free, contain nuts, etc. Please use the labels or bring your own small label of ingredients. Since salads may or may not contain meat, please use a label if it does. Entertainment Committee members are there to assist you.

GameNight! Evenings

Join us at the Obsidians Lodge to play games, visit and have fun. We have a variety of games, but feel free to bring a fun game to play. We play between 4:30 PM and 7:30 PM, so both working and retired folks can join in the fun. Arrive any time throughout the evening. Bring your own non-alcoholic beverage and, if you want, a light snack to share.

Be sure to check the Calendar before you arrive in case of a change in date or time.

The United States has a long interest in trails, from exploration across the continent to recreation, as well as a history of usurping large swaths of indigenous land for recreational activities. In the late 1800s, social clubs became important, including the Appalachian Mountain Club, which was the first club to build trails and to admit women— a startling social reform of the day! Today we hike to maintain trails, advocate for public lands, enjoy social connection, and absorb the quiet… much like the Obsidians. Join us as Obsidian member, poet, and wordsmith Brenda Kame’enui talks about trails of exploration, sorrow, and pleasure— from the Missouri to the Metolius and Tuolumne Meadows to Twin Peaks. She will touch on Native American trails, the National Parks, the Oregon Trail, and some of her favorite trails in this heartfelt photo essay. More >>

Lana Lindstrom and Richard Hughes recently rode their bikes on the Great Allegheny Passage and the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Trail, a 330-mile traffic-free route from Pittsburg, PA, to Washington, DC. Sue Zeni did a similar trip last year. They accomplished the route through two different experiences – one used a company to transport luggage and make the lodging and restaurant arrangements; the other was done as a self-supported camping trip. John Miller is familiar with the saying, “It will never happen to me.” As a past member of Eugene Mountain Rescue and with 21 years as Search and Rescue Coordinator with Lane County Sheriff’s Office, he has a good amount of experience in dealing with unexpected scenarios. John is the current chair of the Obsidian Safety Committee and an avid outdoors person. He will present an interactive, fast-paced show-and-tell session, review items we should carry during our hikes, and discuss best uses. He will share some interesting stories and also cover a bit about home safety and how our changing climate may affect our home emergency preparedness. So, whether your pack is already set up for any emergency, you’re just not sure what you need to carry, or you want to beef up your safety preparations at home for you and your family, this presentation will be informative for all. Have you ever wondered who removes the trees that fall across the trails? Who puts up those blue markers on your favorite ski trails? Or who picks up trash along the shoreline and maintains fire rings around your favorite mountain lake? These are just a few of the stewardship activities Cascade Volunteers (CV) does in the Willamette National Forest and adjacent public lands. Learn about all the work CV does that allows us to enjoy our time in the forest. If you have ever thought about how you can help, or if you just want to gain a better appreciation of what happens behind the scenes in our trails and forest, come join us at this Potluck & Presentation. Several Obsidians already volunteer with Cascade Volunteers and YOU CAN, TOO! More >>

Japan’s Tokaidō Road was the main walking trail between Kyoto and Edo (now Tokyo) back in the 1600s. Obsidians members, Ane McKee and Hally McCabe, visited Japan last May and walked a portion of this historic trail, following in the footsteps of great emperors and powerful shoguns who shaped Japan, samurai warriors, merchants, and travelers who were given permission to leave their villages. They will share some of the history of this iconic road, talk about the regional specialties or famous items (meibutsu) of the post-towns along the trail, and give some suggestions on how you can travel in Japan and experience the more rural parts of this beautiful country.
