SUMMARY:Obsidian Loop
DESCRIPTION:Last Call High Cascades: NOTE TIME. *** We will go counterclockwise if there are views\, because the upper parts of the trail with views are northbound. If it is foggy\, we will go clockwise\, since it won’t matter. There is a significant likelihood the hike may be canceled due to snow\, road closure\, or significant rain on hike day. Please bring warm weather gear\, including warm hat\, gloves\, gaiters\, and decent rain gear and boots. Walking poles are not a bad idea given the possibility of snow on the trail. Most see this trail in sunshine with wildflowers; seeing it in snow and fog is also nice. I’d like to finish no later than 3 given the early sunset. NOTE: Daylight savings time ends that night\, so there is NO time change for this. It is not a home football weekend\, either.

SUMMARY:North Bank Habitat
DESCRIPTION:Canceled because of no sign ups. This is one of my favorite hikes. The North Bank Habitat is near Roseburg\, exit 135\, Wilbur\, then on North Bank Rd to the West Entrance. The drive takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes. The up and down loop hike has rolling—some steep & challenging hills— up to and along the ridgeline with oak savannas\, meadows\, and views of the Umpqua River. Hopefully the fallen trees have been removed since April 13 when I hiked it last. One will need to watch for poison oak. Expect a few muddy sports but it might be dryer than usual. We should start hiking around 10:00 and complete the hike around 3:00. It will be a steady moderate pace with a late lunch so bring some snacks or two lunches. The elevation gain is like doing Mt. Pisgah twice.

SUMMARY:Halloween Cemeteries Walk
DESCRIPTION:Update. Change of Meeting place is Tugman Park. Park on Hilyard Street near 38th Street. Dorene and I scouted the route: Start up through Tugman Park to Brae Burn to an obscure nature trail up to Westhaven Cemetery. Then backroads and another secret path to Mary Lane— entrance to Calvary Cemetery. Crossing Crest Drive to trails at the back of Wayne Morse Farm and amble our way back to Tugman Park. Optional lunch at nearby Tradewinds . Not sure of mileage or elevation but there are some up hill sections with unmaintained trails. There are bathrooms at Wayne Morse Farm.

SUMMARY:Amazon Hdwtrs/Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:If this is your first time on this Obsidian hike and/or if this is first time you have hiked up Spencer Butte from the lowest elevation\, you may want to call the leader to discuss the pace. It is a conditioning hike where everyone is challenging themselves to go at a moderate or fast pace. —not like the other hikes on our schedule. If you have questions\, email summertrips@obsidians.org. Every Wednesday we do this hike from the Martin Street Trailhead to the summit of Spencer Butte. Compared to starting at the paved Spencer Butte parking lot\, this hike has double the climbing and three times the distance. A great way to get and stay in shape. Registered guests are welcome.\n   To get to the trailhead: Take West Amazon to Martin Street. Turn left. Drive past Kinney Park and park Martin Street near the Kiosk sign board across from Canyon Drive Street sign with hiker symbol. Please call the leader if any questions. SUMMARY:Mt Pisgah & Mushroom Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Mt. Pisgah Mushroom show starts at 10:00 so we should not have a problem parking at the North Trailhead where we will start the hike on Trail 3. Mileage is an estimate depending on weather and participants. Some may choose to depart for the festival at various intersections. Directions to North Trailhead: Instead of turning right to the usual meeting place at yellow fee box\, turn left after crossing the bridge spanning the Coast Fork of the Willamette River and proceed a 1/4 mile to a gravel parking area. A sign kiosk indicates the North Trailhead. You will need a Lane County Park pass. There is no fee box at this parking lot. I plan to hike on the back trails to the top and eventually make our way down to the mushroom festival where we can view and eat lunch. If you want to attend\, the suggested donation fee is $10.00 I recommend that you pay online (easy) if it is available. mountpisgaharboretum.com/festivals-events/mushroom-festival-2019/

SUMMARY:Chinese History in Portland
DESCRIPTION:Load Bus 7:30 AM\, depart 8:00 AM\nPortland’s Chinatown is our October destination. Located in “Old Town” are the remnants of a thriving Chinese community dating back to the 1870s. At one time it was the second largest Chinatown in the United States. This is an Oregon history story that we’ll experience at the new Chinese Museum opened in December\, 2018. We’ll also tour the beautiful and culturally inspiring Lan Su Chinese Garden. Lunch (included) will be at the nearby Golden Horse restaurant. We will look for the old underground tunnels and imagine the stories to be told. Businesses\, family associations and underground illegal activity thrived. In recent times\, with gleaming new developments happening in the “Old Town” historic district\, the Chinese community is moving to 82nd street on the east side of Portland. We’ll return to Eugene via the east side and down Hwy 99.\nALL BUS TRIP PARTICIPANTS MUST COMPLETE A MEDICAL INFORMATION FORM FOR CURRENT YEAR. SUMMARY:McKenzie River Trail
DESCRIPTION:** Meet up: Belknap Hot Springs Lodge Parking Lot. ** (scroll down to see all info) \n*Please note that this is a long and difficult hike that requires us to hike at a fairly rapid pace because of the short daylight hours. There will not be time for: sight seeing\, bird watching\, or mushroom picking because it gets dark much earlier before sunset in the dense forest cover and it’s mandatory that we stay together as a group. Even though there is a net loss of about 1500′ of elevation\, there are several climbs on this hike. We will end the hike at the Belknap access road which will be 5 miles shorter than doing the whole MRT. \n*The meet up place is at Belknap Hot Springs because several hikers are camping or staying in the lodge there for one or two nights. You are encouraged to do the same. However\, if you decide to drive out the morning of the hike from Eugene\, please allow at least an hour to arrive at Belknap. We will depart from Belknap at 7:30am and drive north on Hwy 126 to the north trailhead of the MRT near Fish Lake. We will need 2 cars to take us to the trailhead and 1 car back at Belknap to retrieve the 2 parked cars since this is a one way hike. We should be on the trail no later than 8:00am to assure being finished before dark. \n*It’s likely that the first couple of hours of the hike will be at or near freezing temperatures (or below). Be sure to pack a heavy jacket\, dress in layers\, bring gloves and a hat. The trail is often rocky so good hiking boots are a must. I’ve done the 26 mile version of this hike 3 times and several snacks and a good nourishing lunch is a must. With cooler temperatures\, water requirements will be 2 liters minimum. You can also bring a water filter to filter water right out of the river. \n*After the hike\, you’re on your own. Most of us will elect to soak in the hot springs pool for a while before driving to Takota’s for dinner. Those of you not staying at Belknap for the night will likely want to drive back to Eugene. This hike will be cancelled if the forecast looks like rain.

SUMMARY:Four In One Cone
DESCRIPTION:This is the FOURTH ANNUAL CLARE TUCKER MEMORIAL FOUR IN ONE CONE HIKE \nSNOW UPDATE: I was doing trail work in the Willamette Pass area\, and the snow level was 5500′ (slight)\, with 4-6 inches in the forest over 6200′. There may be shaded or north facing parts of the hike (Four in One Cone faces south regarding trail)\, so expect maybe some snow and a few slick areas. It shouldn’t be a problem. \nThis is a solid moderate hike to Four in One Cone\, which was formed 1790 years ago or thereabouts. The trail leaves from 242 and goes 3 miles to the first of two volcanic areas. It then goes back into the forest before reappearing on the open plain with a path up to the cone which gains 160’. We will have lunch on the cone if the weather is favorable for it; otherwise\, we will eat in the woods\, where there is shelter. \nI’d like to be done no later than 3 and maybe 2:30\, since it gets dark earlier in October (then the sun runs “fast” compared to the clock).

SUMMARY:Crabtree Valley
DESCRIPTION:We will drive to the Safeway in Sweet Home\, stop for bathroom break\, and continue further northeast. From the trail-head\, we will hike down to a beautiful valley with a sparkling lake ringed by large firs and cedars. Waterdog Meadow overlook is our lunch destination. After the lunch we’ll bush-walk 0.8 miles through Skunk Cabbage\, and swampy Devil’s Club jungle to the area with dozens of huge trees\, including one of the world largest known Douglas fir\, “King Tut”.\n➽ Drivers be aware. From Sweet Home to Crabtree trailhead is a long drive on winding road. Last half mile is somewhat bad road.

SUMMARY:Amazon Creek Search

Perhaps lunch downtown —catch Bus 28 back to Martin Street. If you don’t have a bus pass\, I’ll help you with that at the EMX bus station downtown. If you want a longer hike\, consider hiking the Amazon Headwater Trail before we start or walk back to Martin Street.

SUMMARY:Amazon Hdwtrs/Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:NOTE THE TIME CHANGE: This is a leave no trace hike. Please do not litter\, and if you are so inclined\, picking up anything along the way is great. The Obsidians are responsible for the upper reaches of the trail\, and if you bring a plastic bag\, it makes it more likely you can throw in the extra poop bag that somebody left\, thinking they had done their job.\nIt is also a DO NOT FEED THE ANIMALS hike. The last time I went up on top\, a squirrel was running across two women’s legs\, when they didn’t want him there. This occurs because the animals are habituated to food. Don’t add to the problem. It is not cute to think we are trying to tame animals that should remain wild. Thank you. mss \nIf this is your first time on this Obsidian hike and/or if this is first time you have hiked up Spencer Butte from the lowest elevation\, you may want to call the leader to discuss the pace.
