DESCRIPTION:The UO has a long and distinguished scholarly history …it has also seen several scamps throughout the years. Our walk will focus on the lighter side of academics including student life over the decades\, campus legends\, and famous pranks. Did you know the first UO mascot was a goat that wore a green sweater? Going to a saloon was grounds for a student being kicked out. That an affair helped to create a schism between the UO and OSU. And that the famous “O” on Skinner Butte has been painted multiple times\, but not with brushes. The walk begins and ends at Espresso Roma (825 E 13th Ave\, Eugene\, next to the Duck Store). Our walk should be finished by noon.

SUMMARY:Horse Rock Geology
DESCRIPTION:From the trail head we will hike through small pine stand into a meadow\, then along a gently rising grassy ridge. Our destination will be an eroded volcanic vent and radial dyke that erupted roughly 30-36 m.y.a. This is rare look at some rocks that formed the old Western Cascade volcanic arc some 28 m.y. before the High Cascade volcanic ark formed about 2-3 m.y.a. If we are lucky\, there will also be a few early wildflowers and a good view of the South Willamette Valley.

SUMMARY:Hart Mountain
DESCRIPTION:The weather in May can change rapidly.  Usually\, any snow or rain moves through quickly.  I have seen no bugs and bugs this time of year. We will be driving up hwy 58\, passing Summer Lake and on to Plush.  At that point we are about an hour from camp. We will camp at Warm springs camp ground. There are several hikes from the CG so you are not completely dependent on cars. There are both hot and warm spring close to camp. I recommend the hot spring.  I will bring a couple of camping stoves for hot water.  Also a large net tent in case of bugs.  No cost for CG. Good pit toilets.

DESCRIPTION:We will drive to Junction City headed for Philomath and the Woods Creek Road to the North Ridge Trailhead #1350 (elevation 1300ft. ) It is 4.4 mile up to the day use Observation Point /parking lot and another .6 miles to the top of Marys Peak (3750 ft). We should start the hike around 9:30/9:45.  The pace will be a steady moderate/slow moderate.  Optional: The group could decide to descend to near Conner’s Camp and then walk the road through the Corvallis watershed back to the cars.

DESCRIPTION:Load bus at (former) Shopko site at 7:30 a.m.; Depart at 8:00 a.m. \nRain or shine this will be a fun day with friends.  Heading north\, our first stop will be in Albany for our coffee break at McDonalds (on your own). We will then proceed to the OMSI Center in Portland.  Along the way we will likely see sheep in the green fields and possibly some hawks or eagles.  Your OMSI admission is included in the trip cost.  If you wish to attend a theater presentation you will need to purchase those tickets on your own.  We will have approximately 3 to 3 1/2  hours to visit exhibits\, have lunch and view theater presentations. There is a large cafeteria “Theory” open from 11 – 2.  You may also bring your lunch if you wish\, however you may have to leave lunch bags and backpacks in an unsecured “lunch room.”  We will re-board the bus at 3 p.m. and travel Highway 99 back to Eugene. SUMMARY:Amazon Hdwtrs/Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:If this is your first time on this Obsidian hike and/or if this is first time you have hiked up Spencer Butte from the lowest elevation\, you may want to call the leader to discuss the pace.  It is a conditioning hike where everyone is challenging themselves to go at a moderate or fast pace. —not like the other hikes on our schedule.   If you have questions\, email summertrips@obsidians.org. Every Wednesday we do this hike from the Martin Street Trailhead to the summit of Spencer Butte.  Compared to starting at the paved Spencer Butte parking lot\, this hike has double the climbing and three times the distance. A great way to get and stay in shape.  Registered guests are welcome.\n   To get to the trailhead: Take West Amazon to Martin Street. Turn left. Drive past Kinney Park and park Martin Street near the Kiosk sign board across from Canyon Drive Street sign with hiker symbol. Please call the leader if any questions. One can take LTD Bus #28 to Martin Street.

SUMMARY:Delta Ponds Birding
DESCRIPTION:We’ll meet at the north end of the Green Way Bridge in the Valley River parking lot at 9:00 AM. This is a leisurely hiking and birding trip around Delta Ponds on both sides of Goodpasture Road. In 2019 we saw 21 species even though the water species were spread out over a large area because of the flooding then. DESCRIPTION:Meet at the lowest level of the parking lot down from the fee box.  You will not have to sign your name on the sign up sheet. I’ll check you in. There will be a bag where you can drop your money..  The current plan to take o back trails (5 \, 56\, and 2) to the summit avoiding the crowds on the main trail.  Enjoy the open landscapes. SUMMARY:Rooster Rock
DESCRIPTION:Departs from: Springfield\, Winco Parking lot\, I-105/Mohawk. 1920 Olympic Street\, Springfield. This gives us easy access to get on I-105\, take Mohawk exit to Marcola\, Mohawk Valley and to Sweet Home. It is another 21 miles on Highway 20 to the Trout Creek Trailhead and the Menagerie Wilderness (established1984).  There will be a bathroom stop on the way.  It is a wilderness so the limit is 12. It will be a moderate steady pace for the uphill hike. It would be like hiking Mt. Pisgah twice with few stops. From the junction with the old climbers’ trail\, it climbs 750′ in the last half mile.
