SUMMARY:Amazon Hdwtrs/Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:Every Wednesday we do this hike from the Martin Street Trailhead to the summit of Spencer Butte. Compared to starting at the paved Spencer Butte parking lot\, this hike has double the climbing and three times the distance. It is a conditioning hike where everyone is challenging themselves to go at a moderate or fast pace—not like the other hikes on our schedule. It is a great way to get and stay in shape. If this is your first time on this Obsidian hike and/or if this is the first time you have hiked up Spencer Butte from the lowest elevation\, you may want to call the leader to discuss the pace. Registered guests are welcome. If you have questions\, email summertrips@obsidians.org. Come a few minutes early because we leave promptly at the listed time. (Please scroll down to read all of this trip description.)\nSocial distancing will be maintained. Everyone is required to CARRY A FACE COVERING and know how to use it properly. More information is available on the website. Look for Covid-19 Protocols.\nIf you meet someone going your way\, MASK UP\, excuse yourself and pass. If someone is coming the other way\, MASK UP and if that person doesn’t get over\, step aside and face away. If you are following within 8 feet of another person\, you should mask up. You are in their slipstream. People can change their pace and suddenly you’re too close. PLEASE DO THIS. \nIf you can’t see up the trail far enough to have time to put on your covering\, leave it on. Make sure you can quickly put on your face covering. Don’t congregate when you meet someone on the trail or on the summit. Maintain face coverings or stay 6 feet apart.\nIf you don’t feel well\, please don’t come. If you are not willing to follow the guidelines\, please do not join the group. \nTo get to the trailhead: Take West Amazon to Martin Street. Turn left. Drive past Kinney Park and park Martin Street near the Kiosk sign board across from Canyon Drive Street sign with hiker symbol. Please call the leader if any questions.

SUMMARY:Blanton Ridge to Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:This hike to the top of Spencer Butte takes the less traveled route from Blanton Road. We’ll cross Blanton Ridge before continuing on from the 52nd and Willamette trailhead. This option provides a good in town workout.. If the weather doesn’t co-operate we can forgo the exposed rocky steps near the top. \n To get to the trailhead from 29th & Willamette continue south on Willamette. At Willamette/Donald St Intersection bear right on Willamette. Immediately bear right again on to Crest Drive. Follow signs staying on Crest for approximately 1.2 miles to the Junction with Blanton Road. Turn left on Blanton. The trial head is on your left in about ½ mile. \nAnother way to get to the Blanton trailhead is to go south on Chambers until it ends at Crest Drive. Turn left on to Crest. In about ½ mile turn right on Blanton Road.

SUMMARY:Hunt's Cove
DESCRIPTION:This trail starts out along Pamelia Creek to Pamelia lake. At 3.5 miles we cross a creek on logs then climb up to a ridge with views of Mt. Jefferson. We will lunch at Hanks lake with reflections of Jeff and views of Cathedral Rocks. This is a 12 mile and 2\,150 ft elevation gain route. There is a difficult creek crossing between Hanks and Hunts lakes\, which we may or may not do. If time permits and we can find the user trail that goes from Hanks lake to the PCT\, we may go up for the good views above the lake\, this would be a 14 mile 2\,5000 day. \nParticipants will manage their own transportation. Obsidian protocols for social distancing will be observed on the hike. Refer to main website page for information.

SUMMARY:Hendricks Park Evening Hike
DESCRIPTION:We’ll explore all three sections of the park – Native Plant Garden\, Rhododendron Garden and the Forest – to find out what’s bloomin’. There are 50 some benches throughout the park\, all with interesting histories – my current favortie being the Czech grampa and the cherry tree. \nFor me\, this park has a quintessential PNW feel. Nurse logs are particular to this area and I think Hendrick’s has the best. We’ll find the one with over 20 baby rhodies growing on it. \nDON’T FORGET A MASK – we will be physical distancing. \nA picnic dinner in the shelter before the hike is a pleasant option.

DESCRIPTION:Please have a face covering for when we meet other hikes on the trail and for social distancing. Please read the COVID guidelines on our club’s home page. Estimate time with a steady pace is around 4 hours. The hardest part is the Blanton Heights uphill at the end of the hike.\nThis hike to the top of Spencer Butte takes the less traveled route from Blanton Road. We’ll cross Blanton Ridge before continuing on from the 52nd and Willamette trailhead. This option provides a good in town workout.. If the weather doesn’t co-operate we can forgo the exposed rocky steps near the top.\n To get to the trailhead from 29th & Willamette continue south on Willamette.

SUMMARY:Olallie Mountain
DESCRIPTION:If you missed the Obsidian hike to Olallie Mountain on August 3\, here’s another chance! This hike provides great views of the High Cascade peaks from Diamond Peak in the south to Mount Hood in the north.\nWe’ll start at the Pat Saddle Trailhead and hike through a mixed conifer forest (with some burned areas) and several open meadows. The first 1.5 miles is a very gentle incline\, only gradually increasing in steepness approaching the summit. We’ll plan on having lunch at the summit\, which has 360 degree views. The old fire lookout has burned and there is no shade at the top\, so be prepared. But the views are spectacular.\nPlease read the Covid-19 protocols on the Obsidian website prior to the hike. Participants will manage their own transportation. Note to drivers: the last 23 miles (round trip) are along gravel road 1993\, but it is in good condition\, with only a few potholes. (This hike was scouted on July 10.)

SUMMARY:Lodge/Grounds Combo
DESCRIPTION:This work party will get both the Obsidian Lodge and Grounds spruced up a bit in preparation for the Get Acquainted Hike the next day. The Lodge work will be mainly vacuuming and cobweb removal that accumulated during the COVID shutdown. On the grounds we will be weeding/cleaning the planting beds and cutting back some brush/spent flowers. If time and participation allows we could also do some cleanup in our defensible space around the Lodge. We may need to mow a little bit. It will likely warm up early so hopefully we will be able to finish up in about two hours. There is poison oak various places around the grounds so be aware.
