SUMMARY:Larison Rock
DESCRIPTION:This is a nice low elevation trail through the woods and the periphery of the Deception Complex burn to Larison Rock\, which has nice views to the south. It is close in\, so the drive is not long. The hike is short\, but the climb is significant although spread out throughout the hike. It is\, however\, a MB trail\, so it likely is to be in decent shape. We probably will be back to LCC by early afternoon (2-3).

SUMMARY:Amazon Hdwtrs/Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:If this is your first time on this Obsidian hike and/or if this is first time you have hiked up Spencer Butte from the lowest elevation\, you may want to call the leader to discuss the pace. It is a conditioning hike where everyone is challenging themselves to go at a moderate or fast pace. —not like the other hikes on our schedule. If you have questions\, email wintertrips@obsidians.org. Every Wednesday we do this hike from the Martin Street Trailhead to the summit of Spencer Butte. Compared to starting at the paved Spencer Butte parking lot\, this hike has double the climbing and three times the distance. A great way to get and stay in shape. Registered guests are welcome.\n   To get to the trailhead: Take West Amazon to Martin Street. Turn left. Drive past Kinney Park and park Martin Street near the Kiosk sign board across from Canyon Drive Street sign with hiker symbol. Please call the leader if any questions. One can take LTD Bus #28 to Martin Street.

SUMMARY:Obsidian Grounds
DESCRIPTION:This work party will focus on new plantings for the Lodge grounds. We will create a new planting bed above the Lodge with Oregon grape and sword ferns\, add a smaller bed in the parking area with red-twigged dogwood\, plant 3 or 4 giant sequoia in the far parking island and plant a Port Orford Cedar that Dave Predeek has grown from a cone and is donating to the Obsidians. Other than Dave’s cedar all the plantings have been collected from my property. If we have adequate help and time\, I hope we can gather some of the fall leaves both as mulch for the new plantings and to remove from grass areas so we don’t kill the grass over winter.

SUMMARY:SW hills to Iris Ridge
DESCRIPTION:Meet at 25th Ave. and Hawkins Lane (off West 18th) in front of the Hawkins Reservoir for a hike in the Southwest hills. \nFirst we will take a short walk to the historic Mulkey Cemetery. From there we’ll walk sidewalks and some very steep neighborhood paths up to Iris Ridge park to walk the upper loop trail with views of the valley. We’ll return to our cars on sidewalks and paths back to our car.\nThere are signs warning that the steep\, narrow\, concrete paths may be hazardous and one uses them at one’s own risk.

SUMMARY:Blanton Ridge to Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:This hike to the top of Spencer Butte takes the less traveled route from Blanton Road. We’ll cross Blanton Ridge before continuing on from the 52nd and Willamette trailhead. This option provides a good in town workout.. If the weather doesn’t co-operate we can forgo the exposed rocky steps near the top. \n To get to the trailhead from 29th & Willamette continue south on Willamette. At Willamette/Donald St Intersection bear right on Willamette. Immediately bear right again on to Crest Drive. Follow signs staying on Crest for approximately 1.2 miles to the Junction with Blanton Road. Turn left on Blanton. The trial head is on your left in about ½ mile. \nAnother way to get to the Blanton trailhead is to go south on Chambers until it ends at Crest Drive. Turn left on to Crest. In about ½ mile turn right on Blanton Road.

SUMMARY:Cardwell Hill and Fitton Green
DESCRIPTION:(Meet at Albertsons parking lot\, closest to Burger King\, Santa Clara 97404) We’ll carpool to Corvallis area and start our hike from Wren – Cardwell Hill Trail Trailhead. From there\, we will hike on the Cardwell Hill Trail along the Marys River and then northeast into Fitton Green Natural Area with minimal elevation gain. Then we turn south onto the Fitton Green North-South Trail and climb up to the Allen Thoop Loop for views of the Willamette Valley and Marys Peak. Afterwards we head back on the North-South Trail and turn west on Amy’s Trail (which follows a creek) then explore the Crestmont Land Trust on one of several trails. The final stint is northwest on Cardwell Hill Trail back to the parking lot. Most of this hike is on gravel roads but one dates back to the 1850’s.

SUMMARY:Turkey Trimming
DESCRIPTION:This is the 6th Annual Turkey Trimming hike! It’s a fairly fast paced loop hike\, not a saunter; after all\, the goal is to burn off a few of the calories we ingested the previous day! The elevation gains are mostly in short\, steep spurts. Each year\, I vary the route. This year\, it’s a distinct seahorse shape! The route: along Amazon parkway (Rexius trail)\, over a couple of the new pedestrian/bike bridges\, up a portion of the Ridgeline trail\, 1 block down Willamette and then zigzagging between Donald and Fox Hollow. You might just discover a road/path you have never been on. We will be back in the parking lot 12:30ish…… just in time for lunch. 1 toilet along the way. Much of the route is on paved\, low traffic streets\, but about 1 mile is on the Rexius Trail and .5 mile on the Ridgeline Trail.

SUMMARY:Cape Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Starting at the Dry Lake Trailhead\, we will hike a counter-clockwise loop through the temperate rain forest along Princess Tasha Trail\, Scurvy Ridge Trail\, Berry Creek Trail\, and Nelson Ridge Trail. Although this is not a “view hike\,” there are several places where we will be able to see the coastline and Pacific Ocean. There is the possibility of seeing elk in a large meadow along Nelson Ridge Trail. There are also some impressive Sitka spruce\, Douglas firs\, and old growth Red cedars. The trip will proceed if the weather forecast calls for moderate or intermittent drizzle\, but will be canceled or postponed if heavy rain and cold\, windy conditions are forecast.\nNote to drivers: the last 1.8 miles or so is on a dirt road which is in pretty good condition overall\, but does have some potholes and shallow gullies. Certainly 4WD and high clearance is not necessary. Our hiking plans may be modified depending upon weather conditions.

We follow a small river inlet along the reservoir and then up the river. We will stop for lunch at the “summer swimming hole”. SUMMARY:Hendricks Park Winter Walk
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Wilkens Shelter and we’ll explore all 3 areas of this 80 acre park. We’ll learn the history of the Native Plant garden\, walk several trails through the Rhododendron garden\, admiring new plantings and visiting the new What’s Bloomin’ board – I can promise we’ll will find something in bloom – and we’ll finish with some trails in the Forest. Easy pace. \nAnyone can extend the hike by walking more trails through the forest. I’ll be eating lunch at the shelter at 12:00 if anyone wants to join for a winter picnic – hot tea and goodies provided. \nCarpool with a friend and park at the Forest lot\, Rhododendron lot or there are a few spots on the street. Meetup/Departure Location: Hendricks Park

SUMMARY:Mt. Pisgah Sunset/Moonrise
DESCRIPTION:Look for us by my car a row or two down from the fee box. Sunset is 5:30 and moonrise is 5:17. I want to make sure that everyone gets to the top before the celestial events. Trail 1 has been repaired. I’ll probably suggest that we take Trail 7 and 1 to the top. We will take the main trail (#1 back to the parking lot. Email me at jbjacobsen@comcast.net if you have questions.

SUMMARY:Suzanne Arlie Park exploratory
DESCRIPTION:Dave and I recently scouted part of the park using the City’s online map for proposed trails. We found it a bit confusing but hope to learn more at the Dec 9 public meeting. Come out and get an idea of what the City plans for this area. Preliminary work has begun opening up some areas and planting new trees. Read about the plan at: http://engage.eugene-or.gov/airliepark.\nWe’ll start our hike from the east end of the upper parking lot at LCC. Watch this space for more details.\nNOTE: We will be hiking part of the time OFF TRAIL in an area that has been recently logged\, so the ground is uneven and difficult to walk on with hidden hazards. The City warns that there is poison oak and wood ticks in this area.

SUMMARY:Mt Pisgah
DESCRIPTION:My plan is to walk along the river path to the North Trailhead and take Trail 3 and 4 to connect with the main trail to the summit. The return trip will complete the loop back to the cars. Turn right at the sign for West Summit Trailhead and follow pay fee/station signs. We meet one row down from the gate and pay station. If you don’t have a Lane County permit\, allow time to use a credit card at the pay station by trailhead. \nDepending on weather\, mileage and elevation could vary but around 6 miles at a steady pace. Estimated time is 3 hours so bring snacks. Email me at jbjacobsen@comcast.net if you have questions.
