On the 2nd or 3rd day\, participants will have the option of visiting Cape Disappointment State Park and the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center or planning their own activity. This trip is a shorter and less inclusive version of a Road Scholar kayak trip on the Lower Columbia. Visit https://www.roadscholar.org/find-an-adventure/2288/kayaking-the-lower-columbia-river-exploration-and-discovery to read more about the kayaking trips and lodging.\nPlan to arrive by 4 pm on Sunday. Prior to dinner\, each person will check in at the kayak shop to be fitted for kayaks and safety gear. Meals may be on your own\, shared or prepared by the Duck Inn. One evening we will have a presentation on either the history or the birds of the area. Lodging for the 4 nights will be at Skamokawa Resport\, Condo 3 and the Lott house (www.skamokawaresort.com). Linens and towels are provided. Both buildings have kitchens\, living and dining areas\, as well as a view of the river. The 2 buildings have a total of 11 beds: 4 queens and 7 singles.\nA pre-trip meeting will be scheduled to discuss arrival times\, food\, car pooling and room assignments\, etc. Sign-up starts on Sat June 20 at 7AM for members; Tues.\, June 23 for non-members. TOTAL cost of the trip will be between $580 and $660\, depending on food arrangements. A check to cover the cost of lodging\, guide tip\, shared dinner food\, and trip fee will be due within 5 days of signup. (Check payable to the Obsidians and sent to Emily Rice\, 1615 E. 43rd Ave.\, Eugene\, OR 97405) . This payment is non refundable unless your place is filled by someone else. The other portion of the trip cost\, $307.32\, will be paid directly to the kayaking company by each individual. Information on how to do this\, their refund policy\, and other registration information will be emailed to each participant within a day of signup. If you choose to bring your own kayak instead of renting one\, the cost is the same.

SUMMARY:Hunt's Cove
DESCRIPTION:This trail starts out along Pamelia Creek to Pamelia lake. At 3.5 miles we cross a creek on logs then climb up to a ridge with views of Mt. Jefferson. We will lunch at Hanks lake with reflections of Jeff and views of Cathedral Rocks. This is a 12 mile and 2\,150 ft elevation gain route. There is a difficult creek crossing between Hanks and Hunts lakes\, which we may or may not do. If time permits and we can find the user trail that goes from Hanks lake to the PCT\, we may go up for the good views above the lake\, this would be a 14 mile 2\,5000 day. \nParticipants will manage their own transportation. Obsidian protocols for social distancing will be observed on the hike. Refer to main website page for information.

SUMMARY:Amazon Hdwtrs/Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:Every Wednesday we do this hike from the Martin Street Trailhead to the summit of Spencer Butte. Compared to starting at the paved Spencer Butte parking lot\, this hike has double the climbing and three times the distance. It is a conditioning hike where everyone is challenging themselves to go at a moderate or fast pace—not like the other hikes on our schedule. It is a great way to get and stay in shape. If this is your first time on this Obsidian hike and/or if this is the first time you have hiked up Spencer Butte from the lowest elevation\, you may want to call the leader to discuss the pace. Registered guests are welcome. If you have questions\, email summertrips@obsidians.org. Come a few minutes early because we leave promptly at the listed time. (Please scroll down to read all of this trip description.)\nSocial distancing will be maintained. Everyone is required to CARRY A FACE COVERING and know how to use it properly. More information is available on the website. Look for Covid-19 Protocols.\nIf you meet someone going your way\, MASK UP\, excuse yourself and pass. If someone is coming the other way\, MASK UP and if that person doesn’t get over\, step aside and face away. If you are following within 8 feet of another person\, you should mask up. You are in their slipstream. People can change their pace and suddenly you’re too close. PLEASE DO THIS. \nIf you can’t see up the trail far enough to have time to put on your covering\, leave it on. Make sure you can quickly put on your face covering. Don’t congregate when you meet someone on the trail or on the summit. Maintain face coverings or stay 6 feet apart.\nIf you don’t feel well\, please don’t come. If you are not willing to follow the guidelines\, please do not join the group. \nTo get to the trailhead: Take West Amazon to Martin Street. Turn left. Drive past Kinney Park and park Martin Street near the Kiosk sign board across from Canyon Drive Street sign with hiker symbol. Please call the leader if any questions.

SUMMARY:Blanton Ridge to Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:This hike to the top of Spencer Butte takes the less traveled route from Blanton Road. We’ll cross Blanton Ridge before continuing on from the 52nd and Willamette trailhead. This option provides a good in town workout.. If the weather doesn’t co-operate we can forgo the exposed rocky steps near the top. \n To get to the trailhead from 29th & Willamette continue south on Willamette. At Willamette/Donald St Intersection bear right on Willamette. Immediately bear right again on to Crest Drive. Follow signs staying on Crest for approximately 1.2 miles to the Junction with Blanton Road. Turn left on Blanton. The trial head is on your left in about ½ mile. \nAnother way to get to the Blanton trailhead is to go south on Chambers until it ends at Crest Drive. Turn left on to Crest. In about ½ mile turn right on Blanton Road.

SUMMARY:Steens Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Steens Mt. is located in southeast Oregon. It is a 39 mile fault block mountain. Its highest point is over 9\,000 feet and has 4 large glaciated canyons\, Kiger\, Wildhorse\, Little Blitzen and Big Indian. We will be camping at the south loop campground. This allows us to hike both BLitzen and Big Indiana without driving. One day will be driving to the top of the mountain and visiting Riddle Ranch. Riddle Ranch is owned by the BLM and has a person present through the end of September to explain its history. We should also be able to see the wild horses that are kept in the area. The 2 routes we could take over to the Steens will be discussed at the pretrip meeting on Friday the 4th at 6:00pm—the place not yet decided. I will call everyone by 9/2/20. Please remember to bring face coverings to the meeting. All Obsidian COVID policies apply to trip. The CG has water and good vault toilets. I have hiked both Biltzen and Big Indian. Car pooling\, is up to participants. If you are willing to take a person when you sign up indicate that. If you do not want to take a passenger\, please put 0 in the will take column. No sharing of food. All meals and snacks will be provided by each participant. I will have a means to heat water. I will not attempt to list all details of trip except to say there will be 1 creek crossing to get into Blitzen and 3 for Big Indian. In September the water will be low and we maybe able to do rock crossings. ERROR IN DATE\, 9/10 to 9/15.\n Meetup/Departure Location: TBA

SUMMARY:Scott Mountain
DESCRIPTION:This is a loop hike which visits several lakes (Scott\, Hand\, Benson\, Tenas) and the summit of Scott Mountain\, which has spectacular views in all directions\, dominated by the High Cascades from Mt. Hood to Diamond Peak. Most of the trail is in shady forest\, but there are patches of burned forest and a section on the border of lava and forest. The trail is in good condition with only one downed tree to work around (as of Aug. 1 scouting trip) but can be dusty. Mosquitoes should not be a problem by mid-September. Note to drivers: all but the last 0.9 miles is paved.
