SUMMARY:Amazon Hdwtrs/Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: Flexible departure time from 8:15-8:30.\nEvery Wednesday we do this hike from the Martin Street Trailhead to the summit of Spencer Butte. Compared to starting at the paved Spencer Butte parking lot\, this hike has double the climbing and three times the distance. It is a conditioning hike where everyone is challenging themselves to go at a moderate or fast pace—not like the other hikes on our schedule. It is a great way to get and stay in shape. If this is your first time on this Obsidian hike and/or if this is the first time you have hiked up Spencer Butte from the lowest elevation\, you may want to call the leader to discuss the pace. Registered guests are welcome. If you have questions\, email summertrips@obsidians.org. Come a few minutes early because we leave promptly at the listed time. (Please scroll down to read all of this trip description.) Everyone is required to CARRY A FACE COVERING and know how to use it properly. More information is available on the website. Look for Covid-19 Protocols. If you are not willing to follow the guidelines\, please do not join the group. To get to the trailhead: Take West Amazon to Martin Street. Turn left. Drive past Kinney Park and park Martin Street near the Kiosk sign board across from Canyon Drive Street sign with hiker symbol. Please call the leader if any questions.

SUMMARY:Black Oak Basin Explora
DESCRIPTION:Late change to different hike. Rescheduled from the heat of early August\, this is one of my favorite hikes along the PCT! The tentative plan for the hike from Lava Camp Trailhead includes\, 1) after 3 miles\, a brief stop at lovely S. Matthieu Lake for snacks and views of N. Sister; 2) after 2 interesting miles on good tread through the lava beds\, the trail climbs to the shoulder of Yapoah Crater for views of lava flows\, Mt. Washington\, and beyond; 3) an optional scramble up the fine scree slope to the impressive rim of Yapoah Crater; 4) lunch on the return to Yapoah shoulder; 5) on our return\, another brief rest stop at S. Matthieu Lake; 6) continuing down on the old Skyline Trail to N. Matthieu Lake (a swim is possible if time and temperature permit)\, 7) then completing the final 2.4 miles to the trailhead. We will proceed at a steady\, moderate pace. To best enjoy this hike\, be prepared for a long day with double lunches and double water. Bring the 10 essentials and appropriate gear for wind and cold\, sun and heat\, and possible rain. We will follow current COVID guidelines. You may wish to make any carpool arrangements privately before the trip. Email me if you have questions.

SUMMARY:3 Sisters PCT Section Hike
DESCRIPTION:This is Oregon’s finest Section hike of the Pacific Crest Trail\, a three-day 25-mile stretch passing numerous stunning landforms like Le Conte crater\, Obsidian Falls and Collier Cone throughout which the massive Three Sister’s peaks tower overhead.\nThe proposed hike is one-way northbound and will need a shuttle. One possibility is to drive to Mackenzie Pass and leave a vehicle at Lava Camp Trailhead\, then continue through Sisters and Bend around to the Cascade Lakes Hwy and Devils Lake Trailhead to begin the hike. At hike’s conclusion\, swing back through Devils Lake and head home to Eugene via Willamette Pass.\nThe hike itself is straightforward. Hike up Wickiup Plain to intersect the PCT and follow it north to complete the section. Day 1 – Depart Devils Lake Trailhead 5\,500’. Hike approx. 4 miles with 700’ elevation gain to lunch at Le Conte Crater. Afternoon\, hike approx. 4 miles\, crossing several creeks\, to camp at 6\,000’ above the broad Mesa Creek valley on a small knoll. Day 2 – Hike north on the PCT roughly at 6\,500’ through beautiful alpine country crossing many creeks as the South Sister slips away to reveal the Middle and then the North. Lunch stop at 6.5 miles near Sister Spring and Obsidian Falls. Afternoon hike 3.5 miles with water stop at Sawyers Bar to camp on Opie Dillock Pass. Day 3 – Continue north along the PCT\, passing the Ahalapam Cinder Field and Yapoah Crater to Scott Pass and water at 4 miles at South Mathieu Lake. From there\, it’s a pleasant 3-mile finish past North Mathieu Lake to the Lava Camp Trailhead.

SUMMARY:Rosary Lakes cleanup "Love A Lake"
DESCRIPTION:Starting at Willamette Pass we follow the PCT to Lower\, Middle and Upper Rosary Lakes. Our task will be to clean up the camp sites and fire pits at the lakes and pick up any trash along the Lake shorelines and trail. SUMMARY:Pisgah Ganderflanking
DESCRIPTION:Ganderflanking is an old word from the county of Wiltshire in southwest England. It means “aimlessly messing about” or “walking about aimlessly.” It is also associated with “larking about” which is defined as “to behave in a silly way because you think it is funny.” The hike leader won’t do much leading. We’ll just start walking and make decisions impulsively at trail junctions. By now you can guess that the listed distance and elevation gain don’t hold much meaning. We’ll want to stay together but there might be assistant leaders that go off with groups on sort of a sub-wander. But we will have to rendezvous at some point. After all\, we do have to get back to the parking lot. On the last ganderflanking we did everyone got a number. When your number came up you made the decision which way to go at a trail junction. \nPisgah has enough miles of trails to keep us wandering aimlessly for hours. But\, fear not\, we’ll avoid walking all day. When we approach five limes total we’ll head to the start.

SUMMARY:Mt Washington
DESCRIPTION:Last minute chance to climb Mt Washington this year! Washington is the best experience to get a lot of rock in a climb in Oregon.\nWe’ll start painfully early to give ourselves the maximum chance for success.\nWe’ll hike up the PCT\, take a left on the climbers’ trail and gain the ridge. The ridge is a fun scramble across rock and some scree with some route finding. Well reach the notch where we’ll put on our harnesses and get out the ropes. Then we have 3 pitches of rock to conquer for the summit. We’ll then downclimb two pitches and have a fun rappel back to the notch. Plan on a 13 hour day car to car. Meetup/Departure Location: TBD

For those interested – the Hill Top Bar and Grill where we meet to park is a great after hike dinner place.

SUMMARY:Yoran / Lils Lakes Loop

We will stop at Karen or Lils lake for lunch (and swim? depending on weather). We should have views of Diamond Peak.\nA section that we used to have to navigate through the woods from Yoran to Lils is now an established trail put in by the Forest Service.

SUMMARY:Vivian Lake
DESCRIPTION:We’ll park at Salt Creek Falls and hike up the left side of “Too Much Bear” Lake. On return will loop left via Diamond Creek Falls and back down to Salt Creek. My opinion: route is challenging\, almost 4 miles up hill to the lake. The first 2 miles are moderate\, but the 2nd half is strenuous. The plan had been to take a relaxing break at the lake before heading back\, now that will based on weather. \nWeather update: cold and rain all day\, be prepared with appropriate layers / rain gear and water proof boots. \nCarpools: Leaders not responsible for arranging\, please contact those on list who show seat availability or arrange at the gathering spot\, but there are no guarantees\, so be prepared to drive yourself. \nCOVID and Mask wearing: PLEASE READ COVID PROTOCOL on Obsidians website\, updated Sept 1st
